I think it all depends what you want to get out of surfing. If its mainly summer im going to say roll with a longboard or a mini longboard. As a couple other guys stated,I love my single fin as well. You might want to look at a fish. Are you trying to build a quiver? These are the tough questions you must ask yourself.

i am kind of in the same boat as OP. i learned surfing basics when i was younger, but due to a back injury have just started getting back into the water a couple years ago. i started out on a 6'8 aloha RV thruster--a shortboard shaped funshape. extremely floaty, stable and surprisingly good in bigger waves. when the waves werent as good however it has a knack sitting really high on the wave when you are trying to catch it, i wanted something that has a little more "get out and go". last year i picked up a 5'8 WRV fish, basically a RNF knock off that i freaking love. definitely harder to get balanced on when popping up, but its worth getting the hang of it. its like the fighter jet theory--if its less stable, its more manueverable (at least with this board). super responsive, very fast, very easy to paddle and catch waves.

however i surf in OCMD, sometimes when the conditions are good the waves can get a tad steep and fast. the 6'8 can suffice in these conditions if i really work it, but the fish is a no-go, at least for me. pearling almost every time when its that steep. should i keep with the program and learn how to deal with these types of waves with my current boards, or look for a more performance oriented shortboard? id certainly like to look into a shortboard that can handle drops and steeper take-offs. if i was going to get a new board it would be for waist to HH or OH waves. ive been looking at boards like the CI flyer or the lost mini-driver. any input would be appreciated!

BTW the 5'8 WRV fish i have IS a twin-fin. like what the guy sad about single fins they might be harder to get the hang of at first, but you have to learn to surf in fluid, fast lines using a board like this. very loose and "skatey", but now i love the looseness and my big 6'8 funshape is far too stiff for me to really get down with these days, especially in the earlier sections of the wave.
