Do any of the locals know if either place will be rideable (or just total chop) on Saturday or Sunday? The current forecast says green on Pawleys and red on Myrtle. I have a free place to stay in the area, but I would be driving from Charlotte. If it is going to be a mosh pit, I will save the gas and jump in my washer for the same effect.
i duno bro....swellinfo is saying clean, my marine info program thing on my phone is saying heavy chop for saturday....usually both of them coinside with each other typically saying the same thing but this time they are different, tomorrow when my phone updates i'll update this post
because the wind will shift once the storm passes heading north and become offshore and strong offshore...it is extremely possible for that big mess to become huge, clean peaks and then eventually even out for lovely long lines with size. AAAAHHHH...sounds good anyway. Its all about timing. Id come dude cuz if ya don't it'll b kick ass and youll hear about it from your friends. no fun. if ya gotta place to stay...definately come...worth the risk
For Saturday, plenty of swell, clean conditions will be dependent upon the exact path of Hanna. As Hanna passes to the north, you are going to see a westerly wind shift. The GFS model is showing more of a W/WNW shift, while the GFDL model is showing more of a WSW shift. For the Myrtle beach area, you want to see the W/NW shift. Pawleys handles the SW winds better. Sunday, wind and swell looking good -> take a trip! Keep an eye on the forecast updates.
ooooooh yea , totally did not answer your question about where to go. get as far south as early as possible and wait for the wind to switch!
Thank you all! I am taking the trip. To cricha's point, I am not going to risk not going and then hearing about it.
if that wind is really hard out of the NW it can blow it flat in 30 min. seen it happen too many times. pray for light wnds
in all my years of watching hurricanes and tropical storms pass the grand strand i don't remember there ever being any leftover swell once a hurricane passes. it flattens out pretty quick with the westerly winds and the storm itself pulls most of the swell with it. i see our best potential for clean surf coming with the swell from ike not from hanna. i'll be down there early to check it but i am not overly optamistic.
Might be heading to Holden tomorrow or sunday. I just called the guys at Surf City around 30th street. They said it was around waist right now in Myrtle.
updated forecast time is on the bottom of the detailed forecasts (bottom left). Currently updating at approx. 6am/6pm ET
Yeah, my guess is shin high tomorrow morning. West wind at 25-30 knots will take everything out of it in no time.
Went out today at 2ish. Real clean with good lines around 3 then as the day progressed it got windy-er and choppy-er. It was real good, waist to shoulders for quite a while. Heading back out tomorrow around the same time if the wind is off it.
Since you are driving all the way here I will help you out. Pawley's Island will be your best bet for Saturday. PI faces east instead of south east like MB. The winds out of the west will be offshore keeping PI cleaner tomorrow. There is also a surf comp at Garden City Pier Sat. at 8 a.m. Could be good.
