Hi. I'm a reporter writing a story on the correlation between beach replenishment and spinal injuries. I'm looking to speak to anyone injured on a beach that had a beach replenishment project that year or the few years prior. If you fall into that category, please email me at: chickenlittle63@yahoo.com I'm also looking for any information on studies being conducted on the correlation between beach replenishment and spinal injuries. Thanks in advance. Caren
I believe the Delaware Sea Grant performed such a study last year (or maybe still is). Look up that organization. Waves that break closer to shore will lead to more spinal injuries. Beach replenishments have the ability to reconstruct the nearshore bathymetry profile and lead to waves breaking closer to shore.
Take a good look at the North end of VB. Used to be 3 line ups on big days. the furthest a 100+ yards out(people were dots on the beach). After getting rid of the "storm drain" at the dune, it doesn't break any further out than 25 yards. in the past, one had to have some skill just to get to the choice waves.
They started doing it at Sandbridge again, just when a wave was starting to show back up. Grrrr. Has anyone here biked into False Cape to surf, or will the rangers cry?
Their was an article published last year hospitals were seeing increase of cases of spinal injuries after Delaware's last Beach Replenishment projects. I looked into it as a downside of type of sand used for replenishment projects creating deep drop offs. You might want to check out Chirstopher Reed Foundation as they had published several articles as well as Cape May NJ had a rash of injuries so they asked for studies by Army Corp. So if you search Army Corp try the Phila and New York Districts for any Cape May studies.
Virginia Beach is on going with Beach Replenishment. As Masterjasson mentioned they are currently doing one in Sandbridge and you they have a link of a time-elapsed video at Surfandadventures website. When construction is done (supposed to be this month) I will probably start surfing down there again and can provide info as needed. You are able to bike into False Cape and surfandadventure have some escape down there that I signed my wife up for where they pop the boards in trucks and go down for some womans Yoga and board riding. I plan on making a trek down there sometime this summer on bike and camping at the site they have. Checking google earth and tide charts/swell direction it looks like it might be a VERY solid spot. Comparable to Nags Head without the drive.
Looks like they're doing it on the Oceanfront too. http://hamptonroads.com/2013/04/virginia-beach-uses-sand-fortify-storm-protection Also, back when I lived in VB, I always thought that whenever they replenished Sandbridge, the natural flow eventually brought that sand to the break I frequented, Dam Neck. Was I being ignorant?
the north end got all it's beach from the south. Before they used our tax dollars to fix sandbridge, parking was as non existent as beach access.
I'm going camping for 2 nights at False Cape in two weeks. We are canoeing in with our boards in the boat. Hopefully we score. I'll post some pics if we do.
If you're talking to me, Zeroevol, rest assured, I am not a personal injury lawyer looking for clients. If you saw my paltry bank account, you'd know I was a freelance journalist and not a lawyer.
you prepared to carry all that crap to your site? gotta have someone on your site when you're out. tons of strangers, transients and ne'er do wells there. plus wild pigs. the ranger doesn't give a crap because he's out by night fall.
Well, considering you are new to the site, welcome! Second, don't take anything personal on here!! Have fun and I hope you get the info you are lookign for!
I've seen a bunch of broken spinal cords on the JERSEY coast. This forum needs to quit making lite of a situation that is not funny.
Not sure about previous beach replenishment, but the waves always break shallow on parts of IOP from low to mid tide. I blame Sandy for changing our sand bars. If they do any replenishment, I am guessing it will be 10x worse.
Thanks, Zeroevol. No, no worries. Didn't take anything personally. Just wanted to set the record straight.
i've heard that massive pectoral strength (4 bills worth) provides spinal protection from 23' beachies
