Im gonna be a freshman at URI next year, and was wondering what boards i should bring with me. Im six foot one and weigh 175, im physically fit. i ride a 6'2 alternator as my go-to board, i have a 6'8 fish for mush/small (3ft or less) and a ****ty six four board im gonna sell. my big question is, should i invest in a good 6'6 step up? how big does RI get at its biggest, and woudl my 6'2 be good in it? i ride the alternator in stomach high to overhead any comment s would be great
If you want to ride mush/small waves then you NEED a longboard. We have longboard point break waves out here that are far different from nj/long island. We have a bunch of longboard really shallow take off slow type spots here. We do have shortboard spots too of course.
your not moving to fiji dude. for the most part its mushy and ****ty like the entire east coast but occasionally gets good. bring your fish and a normal shortboard. and maybe a log, the URI kids clog the lineup up though the locals hate them all just a warning just be cool.
What are the good spots around Newport? May be headed there on Thursday with a girl who's got a house near the beach. Figuring on what to bring for a board. Got a 6-6 fish with lots of volume, 7-0 hybrid, and 6-1 semipro that may not fare well in the chop that is forecasted.
The biggest I've ever seen it in RI is like 8 feet. March 9th. It was firing at Matunuck that day. Anyway, I've got a 6'1'' Channel Islands Gravy as my all around go-to board. It works in everything. Great board. I think you should invest in a step up because in my opinion (if you get the right dimensions), it will work in everything. Try sticking local if you can for a board too because they make boards specially for our area.
Are you being serious? I've seen triple overhead plus clean and not closing out. This is of course incredibly rare and requires a hurricane.
You'll be fine for the vast majority of days. Might want a log if you plan on staying at school over the summer. There's definitely the potential that during a hurricane, you'll be undergunned - I'd say cross that bridge if and when you get there. Even in most hurricane swells (assuming you're a relatively competent surfer, and if you're not, don't go surf a hurricane swell), you'll be fine with what you've got.
