Alright, since it was a good topic on another thread, lets duke it out. There are various thoughts on who out weighs who as far as consistency and quality. Florida is getting my vote.

Post pics, videos or thoughts backing up your argument.

This is only one video, but focus on the 2:00 - 3:00 minute mark in it. I would say, hands down, those waves in this Florida video are bigger, cleaner more makeable barrels than I have ever seen footage of in Jersey.

P.S. Still shots of pre-closeout standup barrels don't count. I'm trying to see guys in solid 15 foot surf getting shacked and coming OUT of the green room like the footage below.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHIJulp9ITY

And lets face it, Sandy was nice to Florida surfers, but every single year the same thing happens, some freak swell makes random florida spots go nuts... My argument is that Florida's atlantic coast not only has more ridable days, the sand and reefs down there can hold enormous swells that the midatlantic cant...

Its simple, if you are willing to handle the cold than Jersey is much better than FL. Ive lived in N. FL and Jersey, its not even close....Jersey wins by TKO. Great vid.

Dude, the Sandy swell in Florida was an ONCE-IN-A-CENTURY event..........

Now get this straight y'all, I am not ragging or disrespecting Florida. I dig the whole Florida scene. But when it comes to consistency Jersey has it HANDS down. Just look where all the wave producing fronts come from and eventually head off the east coast. Most lows and other systems come across the country and head offshore between North Carolina and the North East. I'm not aware of any swell producing activity, of any significance, that exists exclusively to Florida from the east or south

And these rare swells that make Florida go nuts happen VERY infrequently. The last thing that even approached Sandy was the Halloween swell of 1993(I think that's the year). 1993 - 2012 is a long time.

Yeah, New Symrna has a waist high wave or so everyday or so they say. Ok. But you can find Sebastian Inlet at any jetty down the block in New Jersey. Having a few spots like Reef Road, The Pumphouse, and Monster Hole that get good once in a while doesn't make it more consistent than New Jersey. Dude, Ocean City Maryland is more consistent than Florida.

East coast surf scribes will tell you, even video legend and Florida guy Kevin Welsh said, "Florida has the oranges but Jersey's got the juice." Jeez, I've said that like three times already. That dude made the first martketable east coast videos and kinda spent some time all over the east coast.....plus he was based in Florida. So if he's saying it......

Transworld Surf Photagrapher Legend, Seth Stafford, said concerning his college years in Florida, " Wayyyy less consistent and less heavy than New Jersey. Wasn't much different between Florida and West Chester, PA."

Wow, that last quote was shocking.

Oh if I has access to them New Jersey has pictures of waves that size too. There's pictures out there of Casino Pier 10' + and absolute sheet glass perfect. I know back in the day Manasquan Inlet could handle anything the east threw out and dudes like Tony Giordano and Kevin Casey had numerous pictures taken of them surfing 10-15' Manasuqan.

AND..........you realize that while Florida had the surf you posted above.......THAT DUDES IN MARYLAND WERE TOWING INTO THE SAME TYPE OF WAVES........THE SAME THING A DAY OR TWO LATER. So..............how does that make Florida special? Hmmmmm not so much.

I thought the rule was post videos and pics, instead of just claiming why you think one is better than the other. Where are the videos!!! At least Zach posted some.

First of all, I don't post videos or pictures or links on here. Never have, never will.

So we should make this a - "Find And Post The Best Pictures of New Jersey And Florida You Can" on here. Claiming Florida is better because of ONE swell event isn't a sound supportive argument. Neither is posting pictures from said, "Once-in-five-centuries" swell event.

Shoot, I can post pictures of Stumpy Point that makes The Great Lakes look better than the east coast. Well, go to Surfline and look at all the Photo essays they did on the East this past winter(don't look at the forecasts over there, just look at the photo essays). I'll let y'all compare and decide who's got more class.

And if you want videos go on Youtube and find them yourselves.

Bill, you are getting lazy on us. Anyone can write an essay claiming their state is better. ;)
I could give you an eloquent wall of words comparing Folly Beach to J Bay, but it wouldn't really be an honest overview.

Ahhh, but let me clue-you-in to the irony.........

I actually don't like New Jersey anymore. I'm over it. I want some wilderness or something. Something new. This place ain't nothing but bad memories or good memories that keep one longing for the past. The now and present state of New Jersey, as viewed through my eyes, is not a happy kangaroo one. And that goes for everything, surfing included. Like, I had Harvey Cedars at a time when it was practically dead through Sept-May. This was a while ago. And back then Harvey Cedars had few rivals on the entire eastern seaboard for consistency and semi-closed-out barrels. And that will never happen again.

This is a place where one needs to be reckless and crazy. If you aren't reckless and crazy(or aren't anymore) then there is no reason to be here. If you don't have a certain attitude(or lost it) then there is no reason for one to be in New Jersey.

BUT I will not stand here and have people claim inferior surfing areas as being superior to New Jersey's 127 miles of jetties, and a few piers, that offer the most variety, second best consistency, and an arguablely the heaviest pound factor in the original 13 colonies. OMG, Florida wasn't even an original colony.

HA so there, Florida loses right there.

See, you are jealous of the South. We have the wilderness you crave. Charleston area alone has 3 uninhabited islands.

My dad lives in Bethany and brought me the local paper with those shots on the front page, and I saw all the video footage from OC MD towing session. That was about 1/3 of the size of those shots in Florida. Those guys were towing into 8 footers in Maryland. True 7-8 foot surf. The only reason I gave them a pass for towing was because of the 30MPH offshores that day, but those shots are in NO WAY anywhere near the size of the Florida Sandy shots...

And look at that video again. There is not a jet ski anywhere in florida. Those are guys shortboarding into some serious waves. No personal water crafts.

And im still waiting for people to show some video or photographic evidence of these 23 footers in Jersey =)

But seriously, we have all seen nice cleanup footage from Jersey, but I have yet to see anyone post a video of guys making waves on the heaviest days that Jersey has.

Sure, we can all look at the empty waves shots of places going off. Or the guy in a DOH standup shack in a still shot right before getting sucked in and destroyed.

Im saying, at least those guys in OC MD have video to back up what they were doing that day. I didn't see anything from their brothers up north across the bay. Nada...

    Show me the money jerz!

The winds suck in Florida. Onshore 90% of the time. Smaller scale swell is more consistent in Florida. Usually something rideable in Florida vs NJ which can have longer flat spells. More wave variety in Florida vs NJ which basically is mostly heavy barrels breaking close to shore. Sandbars in Florida are generally better. Some are able to handle longer period stuff due to longer sandbars. Nj's sandbars are mostly short. Of course there are some good bar's in Jersey. Just talking about the amount of them

    The temps suck in NJ.

    That sums it up.

Go to Youtube and watch any Jersey video. AT LEAST 70% of them will show you waves equal to much of the one in your video up above. I just watched it. Didn't watch it when I first came on here, but had a feeling I had seen it. And yeah I saw it before and actually my memory gave more props to Florida than I should have.

The first half shows 4-6' waves that you can see in 70% of New Jersey Youtube videos. Then that pumphouse footage wasn't as spectacular as I had remembered it. The wave is more heavy than big. Actually there really was no reason to tow into those. But I do remember hearing that jet skis were used during that session. But it no matter. I have to recheck but I'm sure the OCMD footage had waves just as big. I believe they were riding shortboards also.

Also another factor that I forgot to mention. I have been a proponet that the waves just aren't as good as they used to be, especially in New Jersey. I really wish I could send you back in time to the winter of 1986-87. Holy mackrell vagina, that was a crazy year. I've never seen a winter that was so raw with ocean energy. Too bad I was a little b!tch back then. I was 13 and it was my first year-round surf year. No Youtube back then.

I'm done fighting for New Jersey in respect to Florida because now I'm on PRESENT DAY vs THE PAST.....who had better waves. Jeez, I had it so good from 1986 - 2001. So good. 1988-90 especially good. Good. Real good. No one around. Mellow scenes. So good. Quietness. Peacefulness. Oh so good. Real good. Eatin the Panzones on Cape May Ave..... Dodging railroad logs at Casino Pier. Catching that friggin sandbar north of the 14 St Pier in OC on NE's right after it started to clean up........100 yard + rides. Big days at 7-11. Gary Clayton. 25th ST in Surf City with the cool dudes. Chuck Allison. States Ave. Matt Keenan. Ah, that one Lavalette summer/fall. AC's inlet hood early in the morning, nothing but dogs hanging around the streets, corners, abandoned lots, etc.

Man today F'ING sucks. It really does. Sorry kids.

The video you posted was all clean up as well, along with the macking pumphouse footage of pros stepping off... I have never seen Florida like that and it will be 100 years before it happens again.

There are spots in NJ and NY that handle size... Most spots are closeouts when it gets DOH, but there are places that work too... I don't travel with a photographer, so I don't have pics or video.

never been to jersey, but it seems consistently bigger with better winds but cold

I live in CFL, water temp is obviously great. Outside of glorious NW winter/fall wind days, winds usually are bad.
Many ridable small scale days, still seems bigger in Jersey.. Pick your poison

I'd like to visit Jersey, but I'm not moving there.

Yeah, the video I posted was just a random one that was posted on this site a few weeks ago. The video isnt epic, but the photos I posted speak for themselves. Those photos look like the south pacific, not the east coast.
