I THINK I saw a gray seal out surfing Sunday. I was out getting the crap beat out of me in shore break closeouts when I paddled out to just float around. A head popped up about twenty yards from me. I thought it was a bird at first but it was a head of some kind. I was out at Sunskipper. Anybody down this way see it?
we see them all the time up here... im sure it wouldn't be that out of the ordinary to see a seal in the ocean in the carolinas. do you see a lot of dolphins?
In NY they hang out, watch you surf, try to get you to play w. em.. funny animals, they only make me nervy b.c. sharks love seals
Tons of dolphins! I've had one scare the bejezus out of me by surfacing and blowing about 3 feet from me. They will actually surf waves around us at times. I've never seen a seal in the water around the Carolinas though.
I didn't see it for myself, but a few of the CB lifeguards posted pictures of a seal on FB. Nourishment pipes were in the background, so it had to be somewhere on the North End. Did you see the one at the KB Pier? I stolled up there on Friday to see it. The seals are on there way back north, but took a quick stop to molt their skin. Pretty cool & tough stuff. http://portcitydaily.com/2013/05/23/gray-seal-the-first-seen-this-far-south-taking-a-break-at-carolina-beach/
porpi around here can be ****s sometimes. I was paddling out and saw a fin knifing thru the water. I put my head under water and started making flipper noises. I raised my head in time to see a swell right in front of my. I scrambled over the top and down into the trough about the time a porpoises arse was in the air. the tail slammed the water a few feet away. A young kid was out and gave a scream, I told him I musta said something about his momma.
I saw him down him down by the drain pipe around last Thursday or so, just hanging out. God he must be hot.
I saw one at Sandbridge last week. About 25 yards from me too. I asked at the local aquarium and they are seen in this area of VB during the winter. So since it is still pretty cool up here, I guess that makes sense. I was wrapping up a session around 7:30 in the evening just south of the pier and saw him pop his head up and look directly at me. He was checking me out to see what I was. I didn't see him anymore after that. First I thought it was a dog but there weren't any dogs nearby in the water.
We also saw the seal chilling at the pipe the other day... On another note, we were surfing there like a week ago and I thought I saw a croc. It had a giant head and markings down the back.. It was huge like 6 or 7 foot. It spooked me a bit so I went up and told the Kure cops about it and they sent wildlife out there to find it. And of course it was gone.... A few days later me and friends were surfing and I saw the same thing past the breakers, so we paddled out and got really close to it. Turns out it was a giant leatherback turtle. It was the biggest turtle I have ever seen.... Nature is awesome.
a bunch have been seen around the rocks at the CBBT http://hamptonroads.com/2011/02/seals-bridgetunnel-islands
Go surf off Figure 8, Lee Island or South Topsail if you want an opportunity to see an Alligator (we don't have Crocodiles) in the lineup. You can also see them sometimes on Ft. Fisher.
Yup, I was out on the south side of the pipe on friday and they had it cordoned off and had a cop guarding the area to keep people away. I didnt get to see it as there was a wall of people, pretty cool though.
A very similar thing happened to me at dusk last November off Dam Neck. Although it might have been a mer-man...or maybe a mermaid. They must exist. Afterall, Animal Planet did a show on them.
anybody else see those penguins at Folly recently. i think they are Razorbills? here for the shrimp and the seals here for the penguins ?
A reputable source told me they got checked out by a 12-14 White last week longboarding on the South End of Wrightsville. Now it's not only the humans from the NE infiltrating our waters! (shaking fist and vibing hard in your general direction)
