things to avoid: double-ups (although about 5% of even those are ridable), close-outs, crowds and being too out of shape to paddle over and catch rogue/shifty waves
Emass, I hate to say it man, you're the biggest clown we've had on the site for a while now. I think you need to take a break for a bit. Do what I do. When I have a question, I think about it in my head, condense it, then type it into google. A wealth of information just pops up. It's really cool. I feel bad for your TV. I bet you yell at it all the time.
+1 especially about the not being just a sport/hobby part...and the transients finding ther hobbies that include cock gobbling.
Emass, you are officially uninvited to Thanksgiving. After that PM you sent me I don't think I can have you in my house.
Poor bridgeport.... even taking some heat from Spicoli from Eastern Mass. No mention of Springfield?
Pro Tip for EMass Want to know how you can improve your surfing??? . . . . . . . .. . . .. . . . GET SOME FREAKING SLEEP!!!!! Your health and general demeanor will improve immensely. Looking at your posting times I can't imagine when you could be getting more than 3 hrs. a night. And with all that paddling and duckdiving practice in 8 footers you must be exhausted.
Wow! This forum has gone down hill since 2010. Please let's banish any person who joined Swellinfo after 2010. That would solve the problem. I actually miss the days when Matt Johnson was still here.
Please elaborate. I'm just curious as to what was going on here in '09 that was so special. I've seen many posts about the state of the forum in the past.
The forum was just different. More people surfing than talking on these forums. I wonder how many people who post all the time can actually surf or even just be able to do a proper bottom turn. When I say surfing, sponging doesn't count. You must have progressed to standing up on a board. It's similar to how we evolved from monkeys. That should keep the thread going, lol.
A lot has changed. Now all the regions are combined into one forum. You gotta deal with us rednecks and the folks from the land of fruits and nuts too. The "shoulda been here yesterday" idea is one that can be found throughout the surf culture.
I can only speak for myself, but I think many of us are stuck at work during the day so we vent here. As far as the sponging comment, not biting but I will say this, I must've evolved and then de-volved, b/c I've ridden many a wave standing up but I just keep going back to my sponge. Funny how I never hear those types of things in the water.
That is some hilarious shizzzz! Emass: First, get a grip. Second, no matter what you do for a living (and no one really gives a rat's ass what you do) the money you get has to come from someone else. You may write yourself checks and cash the checks to write yourself as you claim (why you would do such a redundant and senseless thing is beyond my understanding), but the bottom line is the fact the money has to come from somewhere else first.... unless you are a trustafarian, then I guess the money's just there.
So all this talk of the grandeur of yester-year has prompted me to do a little research. Instead of actually working, and seeing as how I'm really not that productive right now, I figured I'd look back at the older threads and see if there really was a qualitative difference in the forum between then and now. Well, I didn't make back to that magical year of '09, but I did look at what was going on in '10, and it honestly doesn't seem that much different. Threads on topics ranging from summer pros, forecast questions a week out, more fish in the water steep drops, etc., etc., and of course some good ole' surfer/sponger hostility. I did see some of the contributions of the famed Matt Johnson and gotta say I found them to be enjoyable. Now more importantly, I found something that you all should see. In a locked thread titled "Hurricane Kooks", I found what could possibly be the first reference to a bench off. Could this be the cornerstone of the house of our beloved NJSM? I can't make the call, but take a look at the following and draw your own conclusions. What'd that guy David Byrne say? Same as it ever was...enjoy: Hurricane Kooks, 8/27/10, currently pg. 411: "ay badda, i bodyboard and ive surfed like five times cause i dont have a board, to expensive. and i can say that im better than about 50% of the surfers that i saw out there yesterday so what does that say about ur surfers arnt kooks theory? dude andif u wanna fight too i bench 450"
LOL! The guy on the left actually looks like a white gorilla. silverback. These guys probably surf better than people who actually call themselves surfers, lmao. Steps that these so-called surfers follow and then call themselves surfers. 1. Get custom yuppie hipster board. 2. Get patagonia wetsuits. 3. Buy cool surf shirts from new yuppie surf shops. 4. Pull up, check many spots and say it's garbage. This is when it's firing. 5. Pull up and check spots when it's waist high and under. Now, it looks great. Let's surf. 6. Stand up a few times in whitewater. 7. Try to trim and go down the line. Then, fall after a few seconds. 8. I'm a real surfer now, lol. 9. Stop and eat at surf taco. Hey, it's got surf in the name. 9. Drive home with the top down and the board out the back window so everyone can see you're hardcore. Make sure to leave the shirt off while driving and have that salt life sticker on your vehicle too. These types are sometimes worse than the people riding bic surfboards.
And therein lies the beauty of bodyboarding Liam, it's not "cool" therefore will never be trendy...I've seen many of the types you're talking about, yuppie hipster douches, you stand up guys can have them.
touche. Yes, I liked surfing when it was more underground but I'm old. Now, everyone claims to be a surfer and have to make sure everyone knows that they are "a surfer"
