Hi everyone, Myself and a friend in New Hampshire are thinking about putting together a collaboration of work from East Coast surf photographers into an all photo magazine for guys whose great work mainly goes unnoticed by the magazines. At this point just trying to judge interest but looking to get things going by late summer if there is enough interest so if you have any interest and shots which show the "real" atmosphere and perfection of your homebreak or any other waves let me know. (note: all rights to photos would remain with the photographer and would only be used with their permission, and the photographer would be clearly credited for each of their photos) Thank You, John Gilman J.B. I would be interested in adding my photos for your magazine idea. Check out my pages and let me know if you are interested. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rob-Thomas-Photos/277123358968536?ref=hl http://instagram.com/robthomas31
Hi Rob, I took a look at your work and there are definitely some good shots there that we would be interested in using for the magazine idea, at this stage we are working on the layout and garnering as much attention to it as possible and are hoping to get things ready to go by August so keep getting shots like that great barrel shot and we will let you know when we are ready to start putting the photos into the layout. If you get some good ones of the coming hurricane swells before we are ready for layout let us know as we are trying to start with as much material as possible in order to put out the best possible collaboration. Thank You, John Gilman J.B. Gilman Photography
i dig the idea of it, i would definitely be interested and would purchase a copy. also have a few photos to contribute .pm for email.
Why not do a website gallery instead of a print mag? To do justice to the shots, you're going to need a high line screen and at least a number 2 grade paper stock. ESM is great, but it's still newsprint. High quality printing on a web press (which magazines are printed on) is expensive, and you need a high quantity run. If you try to do this on offset press, it could cost even more. You might find a cheap source online, but then you have to deal with shipping and bindery. Or digital press, but again bindery is an issue. I suggest the "online" mag. Get the momentum, sell ad space, make some money. Then quarterly do a print version of all the best shots, with light editorial, and again sell more ad space to offset your out of pockets. Even the website could be subscription based - but keep it cheap. Add a classified section. Maybe just make a photo book to sell online, there's plenty of sources to print these cheap online. Then build a site with some "teaser" images, then a "buy the book" button - or tie it to amazon and market the crap out of it. You can put one out each year. An Annual of the best swells. The Big Year! I'm graphic designer for over 30 years, PM if you want help, advice, or to tell me to go blow...
We were definitely thinking along the same lines, in print at least to start would be too pricey so starting online, key point of the collaboration is to create a periodic showcase of East Coast surf photographers work who are not as well known or are up and coming, if you wanted to help with the design of it and or have any ideas on good hosting sites or such let us know. We mainly want to get the work of everyone who participates to have more exposure which could present them with new opportunities. John G.
If anyone wants to submit images from this upcoming weekends swell you can email me at jbgilmanphotography@gmail.com. Please include a name for crediting purposes. Also, I will be starting to work on putting the layout together this week so we can get the process going as quickly as possible and I will post updates as it takes shape.
The idea is really good and looks so interesting. Thanks for good contributions.I will surely purchase a copy of it. Our Services
began making progress on the layout yesterday setting up the pages and laying in a few backgrounds and photos
Progress is moving along nicely on the collaboration, we have received a number of good submissions and are working on fitting the new images into pages and working on some writing pieces to include as well
Hey Mr. Gilman I wish you good fortune with your endeavor. Stayedstoked? Yeah man, the standard surf mag just blows anymore. There's a few good writers scattered aboot but......... Most travel articles don't take you along on the journey and many, nowadays, are aboot nothing but the plane trip. Plus, people like Chris Cote think they are creative and funny, but they aren't. Man, everything's aboot who you know. AND, please don't let print die. Websites suck. I hate reading things on websites besides peoples' comments on forums. I rather die than read a newspaper online. Kindles/e-readers should be blown up along with their owners. KEEP PRINT ALIVE, you dumb-asses. Mr. Gilman, you ever decide to add some prose to your project, and need some witty, insightful words, you feel free to come knock on my door. So far, I'm the greatest letter-to-the-editor writer in the world. Why, just the other week the AC Press published another piece of mine. I'm still waiting payment though. Everybody stiffs me.
