I need to ride something new an this flat spell on the horizon got me thinking. I want a fishy feelin board with a little less volume and a different outline so here's what im thinking. 5'6'' x 18-1/2'' x 2-1/2'' full rail, slight single concave over the wide point, alot of rocker in the nose and flat rocker to the tail, wide point 1 or 2 inches up from center, into a round tail quad set up. any thoughts?
That's not a bad thought. I personally would go slightly more elongated & wider and then thin it out a touch. Maybe like 5'8" x 19 1/4" x 2 3/8" but that's just me. Also I don't know if a round tail is your best bet. I would go with a squash.
A couple thoughts... Are you thinking wide nose and tail... kinda Sweet Potato-ish? Why a lot of entry rocker/flat tail rocker? I've had better luck with flatter entry, and a bit of kick in the last 6 inches or so, combined with some flip in the nose in the first 4 inches. 18 1/2 is really narrow for small waves. What size surf is this for?
Check out the chemistry wide 6. You want short and thick right? Would you consider widening that 18.5 to a 19.5? Im having my buddy make me a similar version of the Hayden Hypto Krypto. Hoping it will be exactly what I would want in knee high summer surf. Good luck
definetly not looking for a mush board here, i want something that can handle some punchyness in the chest to head high range, i want more entry to get in steep if i have to but flat throughout to paddle better if it's a little in the mushier chest high range an to still keep it fast in flat sections. going an inch wider is probably a good idea an then taper the rails instead but the theme is to keep the thickness an keep it versetile in anything from solid waist to head high. I'm thinking of more width in the nose than the tail though...
OK... go wider, with a continuous rocker that has a gentle acceleration in the nose and tail, and let that single through the middle give you your flatter planing area for soft sections. A quad is a good idea, and a round tail will be fun, too. I'd go EPS/Epoxy.
so here's what im leaning towards: 5'8'' x 2-1/2'' x 19'' lota nose rocker easing into a flat mid section then into slight tail rockr. slight concave under wide point which will be 2''above the mid point of the board. round tail, quad, still debating putting a taper on the rails though...
My advice would be to send your specs to Mike Daniel at Coil and he'll be able to work his magic for you.
The volume of the rail and the deck contour will determine how the top of the rail will blend into the radius. A flat deck will carry more volume throughout the board, but there will be a more tapered angle coming into the rail. And the less volume in the rail, the greater the taper. You see what I'm getting at...
