Tap the local surfrider chapter in Virginia Beach, the surf shops, and "surf-friendly business/restaurants" (such as Mahi's, Pelons, Baja, etc). Get them on board first and then start tapping shoulders in the city council. If anyone is serious about this please let me know because I will help anyway I can. I considered doing the same two years back to get either free parking for surfrider members or at least the ability to buy a seasonal parking pass for VA Beach. Yes I'm a resident; but $2 a day if I can't hit dawn patrol is stupid That's beer money people

Lifeguards: Yes not their fault and at SB a few years back they were private, non vb city, lifeguards. That changed after a lifeguard ran someone over and someone disappeared in the water and a very expensive search rescue went on until the guy saw himself in the news sitting at a local restaurant... winning.

But they don't give tickets... they call the "man" in to give the tickets. Normally if your out of zone they will warn you off first by the magic whistle and crazy hand gestures that reminds me of landing a plane.

As others said hit other beaches with no or less lifeguard presence and SWIMMER presence.

SIDE NOTE: Has anyone surfed little island since the dredging? Not worth the 15 minute drive to find slop. Please let me know!

 

I don't know but nothing is worth riding out at VB right now. I put in an after work session yesterday at Croatan/1st st. and the conditions were just about the worst I have ever experienced in VB. High water volume, very short period mixed swells, and onshore winds. Very frustrating when you think you see a nice wave coming and it flattens out before your very eyes. I think we are screwed for the weekend too but I'll be out there nonetheless

 

Drive on at Assateague. Limited people, no lifeguards, no hassles.......

 

I was out for an hour Thursday around noon (low tide) off the south end of Dam Neck/north Sandbridge. It was like a washing machine. Managed to get three rides out of the mess. But there hasn't been much since Monday evening. A lot of paddling - good workout. Will try again Saturday.

Don't blame the lifeguards, it's not our fault. Do you really think I enjoy telling people to not do the same things that I would do? I'll admit that there's a lot of dumb rules but we need to enforce them or we lose our job. But other than those dumb rules, I enjoy being a lifeguard. I get paid to hang out on the beach and enjoy the sun all day and when I do save someone it's probably one of the most rewarding experiences.

THe op was kicked out I thought because the waves were too big. Somehow this topic veered off course. Blackballed area's are a different story. Just surf in the designated surf area within the flags. What's the big deal? Surfboards can be dangerous to people. That's the reason for having designated surfing area's. Their hard and have sharp fins. I personally love when an area is off limits to surfers because I can then bodyboard the area without fear of being hit in the head or cut! lol

Whether you realize it or not, and I HATE to say this myself, "no surfing beaches" are of a great benefit to surfers. If you could surf anywhere, the amount of collisions between surfers and swimmers would skyrocket. and guess what... swimmers have just as much right to swim as we do to surf. and if you hurt someone by hitting them, they can sue you.

Think of it this way. if someone is walking down a trail in a state park, and you run them over with a dirt bike, you would get sued, right? same thing.

While I will argue til I die surfers deserve more "surfing only" beaches, the ones we have PROTECT US, not hurt us.

grow up, stop "hating the man", and just deal with it. everyone complaining that they can't surf between 10am-5pm during the 3 flattest months of the year kills me.
