I was looking to book a flight on Jet Blue and noticed that their board bag policy states that you can only have 1 board per bag. Has anyone ever had any issues with having more than 1 board in their bag? If so what do they do?
We had 2 bags packed with 3 boards each. We read jetblues policy. We packed the boards in bubble wrap and ducked taped them together. When we went to the counter at JFK my clerk opened my bag to inspect she asked how many boards? My instant response was 1. She smiled and said yea right, I replied with yes 1 it's a windsurf board. I told her my mast and sail were already there. She was so pissed she knew I was lying but there was no way she was getting past all the tape and the line was growing, all my boards were about the same size. My friends on the other hand had the same issue only their clerk didn't care at all she just smiled and said ok to 1 surfboard. They had 3 7'6-8'0 boards. My clerk hopped the scale and ripped theirs open. She let out a war cry of you liars! She could feel the different rails and told their clerk to charge them 3 boards. I ran right over and said for 1 sail board? She gave me such a pissed off look, she said what are all these different lumps. I said I shaped it they are channels, she gave up. As a group we paid for 2 boards and brought 6. Smile be nice and be creative. Leaving from CR the clerk could care less. I could have had 10 boards. Good luck
I've always flown with jetblue and I have never had an issue. I've also travelled with three boards in a bag and did not have any issues, the guys at the counter asked how many and we responded with 1 and they just said sure and that was that no problems. Depending on the airport and the person checking you in you might not get charged. I have had that happen to me a few times and I almost talked a lady out of charging me until her supervisor walked over. Can they legally make you open your bag? They aren't TSA, just curious, because I've never had them say open your bag.
I've been nailed for two boards, and they told me that I couldn't even just pay the fee twice, because each board has to be in its own bag. Luckily this was on the departure, not the return, so I just went back to my car and left a board in it for the week. If your airport has them, I recommend going to the curbside guys instead of the main desk. Throw them a 20 and they'll hook you up. Once I didn't even have to pay the board fee at all, and I had two in the bag.
thought i'd chime in here, since i just got back from a trip w/ jet blue...i couldn't be happier w/ them & the way they handled everything. $50 each way, 1 bag w/ 2 boards in it. they didn't look, just took my word for it (actually, the girl at the check in counter for the return flight didn't even ask, just said it was $50 & was rather apologetic about charging me at all). i've always gotten the sense w/ other airlines that what they charge for boards is very arbitrary; i never got that feeling w/ jet blue. the flights were tearing down the runway right at departure time, no 5-10min lag like some other airlines. VERY stoked on jet blue & can't recommend them highly enough. if you're going someplace they fly to, book them. best domestic airline experience by far.
