    On longboarding:

    1. There are many different types of longboards. Not all longboards are noseriders.
    2. Noseriding is more theatrical, but Knost is at the extreme end. His style is very polarizing and many people prefer a more fluid, smooth style like Joel Tudor or Tyler Warren.
    3. Learning how to get maximum trim is a skill unto itself. It is not as eye catching as noseriding, but it is still a skill. Some longboards' sole purpose is to achieve maximum trim speed. These are not all easy to ride well, see e.g. Frye style gliders.
    4. On a knee high wave, there is nothing that will give you as much fun as a longboard. No groveler or fish can compete on small waves.
    5. Longboards can also be very fun on bigger waves, even if you have other choices. Going screaming fast in trim on a big wave on a longboard with a feeling of total smoothness is addictive.
    6. There are skilled riders of all types of surf craft. It really is like art-- there is nothing better or worse, just personal taste.
    7. It is good to get good on one type of surfboard, but also to branch out and try other styles. Most of the very good longboarders are also very good shortboarders (see Knost and Warren). Surfing different types of boards makes you better all around.
    8. It's supposed to be fun.

Maybe you haven't surfed the right board yet? That's a tough blanket statement.

Until the last year or so, I would have agreed with you for sure. Now, depending on what that knee high wave looks like, I often (even usually) will grab the groveler and have just as much fun or more than I would have had on the LB I left sitting in the car.

Maybe I overstated that. Again, heavy personal preference here. Out of curiousity, what is the board?

The groveler I'm on now is a Bottom Feeder, 5'9" x 21.75" x 2.5" I think? Wish I had it an inch or two shorter, but the extra length/volume probably helps it at the very bottom end of the spectrum. My initial intro to the short/high volume board was on my brother's Fishcuit - that thing can literally catch a ripple, but it's a little too unresponsive for my liking, thing's a bit of a boat.

I've heard the Megamind is the ultimate small wave specialist, I've seen dudes busting airs and getting long rides on next to nothing on those things, one day I think I'll have me one.

How did "TS Dorian" become a thread about the virtues of longboarding? Can we get this back on topic?

Braddah!!! There's a post count equivalent to the NBA shot clock as to when a thread will get detailed on SI. I'm all bout the proliferation of Dorian, but it's coming together at a snail's pace and each time there's an update someone is good enough to post it here. The LB discussion is actually quite peaceful and informative discourse and could've been a thread of its own since it's full of legit opinions and mindsets from different guys on here.

When you see the mother or turd references then you know this thread has decayed!!! So far, no new matchups have been added to the next SI Fight Night card and you havent seen a "meet me at my break!!" yet. Now, if you have some groundbreaking update on TS Shane then let the buoys hear it!!! We are all dying to get so so pinned and shotted brah!!!

I'm on nearly the same thing now. Just an inch longer and 21 even on width. I'm having mad fun with it on these next to nothing days. If it's real bad I bring out the fish. I could bust out the 7'7 and get more and longer rides but it would be planing and that's it. Busting my ass in these crap days have really helped me up my wave count on any decent day that arrives and it also has helped me find any speed possible once up. As soon as you're on viable waves other days, those restraints on catching and speed are gone and you also have the benefit of better foot placement and feeling of when you're planing to the point of having caught that sucker.

Groundbreaking Update #1......I was swimming an ocean mile today (it is as flat as a lake here) and about halfway down, i saw a bunch of people in back of a hotel on the beach looking out at the water and pointing. This is never a good thing when you are the one swimming. I slowly treaded into shore, and asked what's up, expecting a shark or something. Guy says he saw the tail of a crocodile pop out of the water. I asked him if was certain, maybe he saw a ray or a sea turtle. He was certain it was a crocodile. (He is a tourist).

My best guess is that they are letting a lot of water out of Lake Okeechobee right now to avoid flooding if we get hit and it sucked a few gators over the locks and into the river where one made it out to the beach. I walked back. Stay tuned for further Groundbreaking Updates.....

Aww man...Ft. Lauderdale is quite a ways from me, let me know if your going to be in the s. central towards Stuart or Ft. Pierce area, yea man, when Sandy came by here last year, and I wish I had went South, anywhere from a little north of W.P.B. to Miami was awesome. Bring your boards, it looks like there's going to be something by the middle or a little later in the following week, I just hope it stays off the coast!!

Man, that sucks. Those constant letting out of water from Lake Okee is wrecking the Indian river lagoon here. The sea grassnis dead between Melbourne and fort pierce, fish and dolphin are dying due to that. And the government dithers.

Better off letting mother nature take care of her self. Government trying to play god is futile.

This guy is pretty legit with his predictions. He nailed Sandy perfectly last Fall with the European Model.

Looks like it could be another Floyd. First time I surfed OH+ waves in 99' was 4 or 5 days before Floyd hit the banks. If I remember correctly the ESA championships were that week,I have good memories from surfing with some very talented guys out in the lineup...S-turns was going off.

Nature had it set up perfectly with the Everglades as a filter marsh for water coming down the Kissimmee River Basin, down through Lake O. The Army Corp of Engineers channelized the Kissimmee, diked the Big Lake, and Big Sugar took over. Fact! The sugar growers bribe the governor (campaign donations, GoPacs, Cayman Island bank accounts) to appoint puppets on the S Fla Water Mismanagement Board that have stalled any meaningful restoration of the NATURAL flow. Federal judges have said they should build filter marshes and the water should go south from there, not east through the St. Lucie River and west through the Caloosahatchee River to the Ocean and the Gulf repsectively. The polluted, nitrogen, phosphorus rich fresh water is destroying the salt marshes (the Indian River Lagoon) and the ecosystem as nature intended it. The playground we call the Atlantic Ocean is suffering.

So no, it is not better to let these rich a***oles rape the state for more profit, with the "gubment" turning a blind eye. And they ain't dithering, they are banking. Fact.
