Hows the surf in Lahaina? Is it worth saving a day for surfing? Do the waves break on a sand bar, reef, rocks or what? Any info is appreciated!

Ummm...dis boogah comes from Corpus Christi where you get as much surf as Phoenix and Denver get rain (probly less!!!) and he's sayin "maybe we will surf, if it's bombing enuff". You loco man! Brah, in HI the waves so good they break on demand!!! Ditch the rest of "the trip". Either go there for surfing or don't post bout a trip to HI on a forum filled with frothy lads who have been looking at liquid parking lots for weeks. Won't go over well with us if you go to a land of the swell and post up beachside sippin piñas all day braddah!!!
Booooo flying over for honeymoon but can't resist! I would of expected the trolling from other forms but not one where the only reason we're here cause we share the same passion...u let me down bros....and I've surfed east coast and west coast Mexico for those of u so quick to judge...

It breaks just in front and to the north of the breakwall at Lahaina Harbor. It's reef and usually small, but I've seen videos of it around head high. When you go to see the banyan tree (which is pretty much required when going to Lahaina) the harbor will be right in front of you. Edit: When traveling to Lahaina, you'll pass a bunch of places/beachparks where people just pull off on the side of the road and surf. Lots of longboarders.
all bs aside, lahaina is kinda blocked so the waves are usually relatively small. The south swell window is a little bigger than the north, so summer is the best surf. North swells can filter through and wrap into lahaina, but the points just a short drive north are infinitely better - go past honolua bay and you might find one nearly all to yourself (don't even think about honolua - all the waves will be taken and there's a nasty sea cave that has an appetite for texans). If it's unrideable in lahaina, and you just have to surf (highly recommended), drive over to Kahului and hit Baldwin Park (mellow/fun local spot) or Ho'okipa Beach (heavy north shore spot)...hell, it's worth going to Ho'okipa just to watch the pros killing it. Check the report first, summer can get flat on the north shore and it's one of the windiest places on earth. You may be tempted to surf the south west shore of Kihei, and they do get waves, but it's usually not as good as the other two options.
Lahaina is great for beginners! Like waterbaby said, the waves can be very small, which is perfect for people just learning.
