It appears that my company is forcing me to spend the month of October in Feuerbach, Germany for training. I am not happy about it, as I remember last October in SC being rather decent for surfing. So I thought that I might make the best of a bad situation, and possibly spend a couple weekends trying out the North Sea surf scene. Unfortunately, I am about 8 hrs away from Sylt, which sounds like the best bet for some decent rides. My question is, to anyone that has been near there, if the long drive would be worth it? From the reports I have been reading online, it sounds like nothing but super short period wind swell, which would not be ideal. Does it get better there? Should I just say funk day and stick to touring breweries on the weekends? I know this may be the wrong forum to ask, but I am not on MSW forums and I know there are a few travelers on here.

8 hrs drive?...sounds like a major hassle. Most of the pics I've seen of the place look like weak slop...plus you'll have to find a board and bring all your cold winter gear. The bragging rights would be cool, but just not worth it. I'd just sit the month out.

Too many giant wind turbines in the way and blocking the swell

That's sort of what I thought. The surf cams remind me of the Cinque Terre region of Italy. All wind swell on the Mediterranean. It would be cool to do it, just to say I did it. But I don't want to waste a weekend where I could be doing something like hitting museums or breweries. If their were waves, I would be all for it.

No, they're all over Denmark in the North Sea side. Just kidding about swell blockage, I have no idea how those things affect the waves.

Have you ever checked the cams there? All I ever see is beach break that resembles a lake. It is mighty expensive getting around by car in Germany, and I would not have to rent one if I stayed near my area. If there will be little to no surfable waves, I don't want to drop the coin and waste the time. BTW, the museums I am thinking of do not have paintings in them.

I think from what I've heard is that, that part of the north sea is very hit or miss for swell, and mostly miss. But europe has crazy cheap intercontinental flights thru carriers like ryanair, british midlands and a dozen more I can't remember. Rather than renting a car and driving 8 hours, just grab a flight to somewhere with more swell exposure like northern spain, western france, Portugal, Ireland, Cornwall, etc. And if theres no swell then theres plenty to do and see in so many across Europe that you could pick a place in an area with swell potential, like say, San Sebastian Spain, where if theres no swell then theres a ton of cool things to do and see nearby.

remember that you'll be paying like $10/gallon. Expensive 16 hours in the car.

Yes, that is why I asked about it. If I knew there would be decent waves, it would be different.

I'd do it just to have done it at least once.

Not if it would cost you $400 or more, just to find out you are at a lake. I am not interested in just going for a swim. I did that many times in the Mediterranean, which was very enjoyable and only cost $20 each way.

is this your first time to europe?. If so, just the culture shock might last a couple weeks, then you're probably going to get homesick and just wanna get the **** out of there. In other words, you're not going to have time to deal with much else.

If not your first time, the beer, culture, architecture, etc is about a good a surf substitute as any...the month will fly by.

Sounds like you've got your mind made up already. You'll be back to normal in a couple sessions after your month off.

Not my first time at all. I lived in Italy for about 3 months in 2006, then returned many times for week long meetings. I have been to Germany, France, and the UK for short visits. This is my first long stay in Germany. It is not by choice.
