Best place for rental?-Jaco

not sure but be SUPER careful about what you rent. Lots of scams on board rentals. A good one is to put out very thin glassed boards that break easy. you rent it, snap it and are out big $$$.

 

Sorry I can't be specific about a certain shop, but I just got back from there and there are larger sized shops all over downtown Jaco. There are a couple nice sized ones with many boards near surf dog cafe. You shouldn't have any difficulty finding something decent. Have fun!

 

just buy a used board from one of the many shops and resell it at the end of the trip, it'll be a lot cheaper

 

Agreed. You will also get a better deal if you (and friends) are renting more than one. I was able to get a board for me and my girlfriend for $200 total for 6 days. Barter with them and youll do fine.

 

Rented a nice board last year in Jaco for $15/day. Can't remember the name but the shop was on the ocean side of the main drag just south of the only bridge on that road.

WOW surf shop, almost across the Best Western, towards the North End of the strip. $15/day, and I think they even pro-rated it when you return the boards

 

^^ WOW's boards didn't look too bad either.

 

Wow is what I used. I rented a channel island fish and the gf rented a soft top.

 

Carton has the best selection. I was able to get a brand new board to rent at reasonable price. Huge selection.

 

I've rented from Chuck's WOW several times in the past and they were great. When I went in looking for a certain board once and it was rented out, they went in back and pulled out a brand new board, put fins on it and gave it to me (It was a 7S fish). I thought that was awesome and I thought I would like to thank them for that someday. I guess this is it...

I have a condo at the north end of Jaco and have travelled there for over 9 years. Although I have my own boards in Costa Rica some of my friends choose to rent them when they travel with me. W.O.W Surf Shop is located towards the north end of Jaco. It is owned by Chuck who is originally from Florida but has lived in Jaco for over 25 years. He is super cool and honest...rent your boards here. If you need any advice on where to go, what to do, or where to eat don't hesitate to ask.

This the case in ES as well? How prevalent? All the surf camps/hotels seem to have a decent quiver for $10/day. Will pay for itself 3x over in saving airline fees not to mention stress of the liability of carrying your sticks with you.

 

If your surf camp in ES is stocking lightly glassed boards, hoping you'll break them and pay them $$, broken boards are the least of your worries.

If you are going to ES, bring your own boards! My god, you're about to surf some of the most amazing 200 yard right hand point breaks of your lifetime. You will do 3-5 of the best turns you are capable of on every set wave! Bring the two best boards you own for perfect waves and fly Taca...they charged us $120 per board bag.

 

listen to this guy. any time you go to a country like that you had better go with the mindset that everybody will try to rip you off.

 

Heard that, and it's the mindset I'm going with. That said, having good boards with me opens me up for getting ripped off unless I want to feel like I have two children with me for 8 days. On the other hand, the reason I have any board is to get the best rides out of it possible. That's gonna happen in perfect waves a hell of a lot easier than what we get around here.

Likely sticking with original plan of bringing two sticks plus I can put other provisions in there not allowed on carry-ons. Which brings me to...one of the two boards I want to bring has glassed-in fins. Some will say I'm out of my mind to pack that one, others have already said they've done it successfully. I have a plan to protect the skegs best as possible barring pure hate applied to them by cargo and TSA. Let's hear more thoughts. Thanks again!
