So, I've surfed for 15 years now and haven't ever delved into the realm of building. I have proper lighting, a room and a stand to get going, a decent planer and many hand tools from an old wood working/mechanic grandfather. Reading up though i must say the undertaking seems overwhelming; albeit a rewarding venture. Allow me to cut to the chase, I ordered a 6'6'' x 21'' x 3'' blank and my goal is to turn it into a 6'4'' x 18-1/2'' x 2-3/8'' round pin quad. I want a board that will be fast an still go rail to rail well enough, steep and late drops on fast waves and any hurricane or winter swell. Im weighing my my options on concave, in my head i've decided on a nose to tail single, I'll be glassing my fins in and curious to what the collective knowledge this board has to offer, you're free advice will be very much appreciated.
Check out a book called plane shaping. It's available on barns n noble web page and it's 20 bucks. Great book for just the basics and princies of shaping. It's geared towards foam shaping. I like wood but the book was very useful to me nonetheless.
See if you can find a shaper in your area to look over you on your first board. That is how I did it, it'll save you a lot of learning pains
