guam,us virgin islands, puerto rico, these are the only ones in question rule out samoa ect,.. which would you chose and why. Guam would seem obvious but idk i hear you need a boat to really surf there huge sharks blah blah blah huge sharks every where. what do yall think?
to live there or go on a trip? to live there, PR all day. to visit, again, PR but British virgin islands would be cool to visit. heard there is a lot of fun point breaks
Been to St. John, USVI. Had a blast and saw some crazy aquatic life but no waves at all down there. Tortola in the British Virgin Islands has a right point that goes off maybe 10 times a year. PR is the best for sure.
Been to all of those places that you mentioned, PR for surfing consistency, even though there is surf in all of the above. Actually saw surf in Hull Bay in USVI, looked like a long paddle. How about Diego Garcia?
I will throw my vote in for PR. Heard many good things but have never been. Seems like I need to book a trip.
what about the crowds in pr i hear there insane? of course in the popular spots but i mean are there some good spots with less people out that are just as good.
It all depends on when you go, if you go during peak season it'll be pretty crowded in most places, BUT there is always a spot that doesn't have many people out if any at all and it will be a fun wave. When there is a major swell event just prepare for everybody to descend on the island. I was at Maria's when it was 8-10ft and there was probably 100+ people in the water scratching for waves, got pretty chippy but nothing too bad, then the next morning (my B-Day) I scored Maria's at 1st light and had it all to myself for a good 45 minutes to an hour before a couple people showed up, it was HH+ and ended up getting my entire session in before the crowd showed up. So get up when it's still dark and head to the beach if you want to score solo.
I lived in PR for 8 years (off and on). With a little local knowledge, you can find decent waves with so-so or minimal crowds. I've seen Marias jam-packed with surfers and only a 1/2 mile away (within sight of Marias) Doggies down towards Steps has only about a dozen guys spread out on it. Gotta know where to enter/exit the water (urchins) which way the currents are taking you, etc. I guess it's the same anywhere you would relocate to outside of the East Coast.
