I have a sweet Boneyard Surfboards 5'10" twin fin fish with futures. It seems like a lot of people rave about the Rasta Twin Keels, and I was set on getting those. However, I haven't really seen much about the K2's.. Has anyone tried them? My brother is in the Fin Fanatics program at the surfwarehouse site... and I might sign up to try the Rastas, but I already have set fins for my boards and don't really need to sign up if I can just make up my mind and get a set. Thoughts? Also, I was curious... I see futures advertise the fin cutouts as a way to 'loosen up your ride'. While it may serve that purpose, was the main idea of the cutaway to be able to put the fins in without damaging the board? Thanks Mike PS. Do you have a local shop with the Futures fin tree? Its more or less the same thing as the Fin Fanatics program, but more hands on. You can see and touch the fins. I recently went through this same issue, and it really depends on your particular board which of the fins will work best. I ended up with the T1's because they just make my fish work like my fish should. For your board, I would seriously consider the Akila Aipa's. They should give you a super retro feel allowing for broad sweeping round turns, and serious hold in steeper faces. The Rasta's are a great fin but they definitely add looseness to the already loose feel of a twin. Lastly, the cutout on the K1's, K2's, and the Rasta's are not to allow the fin to fit, they are specifically to provide a more forward template, as odd as that sounds, to the fin position. It's a physics thing. Though, they might be fun, I really thing you'll get much more out of your board with a longer fin that has more surface area and less foil, thus the Aipa's or even the T1 Fiberglass fins. It will allow your board to ride as if it has glass on fins.
ahh! I don't know what to get! haha thanks for your suggestion I will definitely look into them more. A lot of my shops didn't even have the rastas so I figured I was going to just buy a set online. What if my main focus is not surfing the fish in steeper faces though? Once the wave bumps up, I'm most likely grabbing my shortboard. I plan on surfing the fish on waist high days mostly. Have you personally tried the Akila Aipa's? Thanks for all of your help. Interesting fin Charles haha.
I had 5'10" twinnie for several years with futures boxes. The only fins i ever used in that board were the Futures K2 and the Rasta Twin Keels. I must have ridden that board a hundred times in every kind of wave between knee high and head high and never could tell a bit of difference between the K2s and Rastas. The Rasta keel is waayy more raked back than the Aipa Twin which is a more upright fin. I've ridden upright twins like the Aipa...I would expect the Aipa to allow much shorter radius turns..the Rastas would allow longer sweeping turns.
Thanks Mitchell. Your post is both incredibly helpful, and not really helpful at all. haha! Perhaps I should go with the Rastas since the money goes to the Sea Shepherd Organization.. and the design goes well with the boneyard surfboards theme (assuming there isn't much difference like you said). I would like shorter radius turns.. but I think I might appreciate the looseness of the rastas.. Plus, I should probably want the fish to do longer swooping turns since that's what fishes apparently help your surfing with (surfing on rail/flow).
I've been riding keel twin finned boards for a while and in my opinion they work the best. I blew out a few fin plugs with the MR fins. To me the Aipa template looks very similar to the MR template. Something to consider, especially if you are traveling. Never blown out a keel fin
the rasta keel & the K2 are essentially identical...if you want or like the V2 foil that futures does, get the rastas. if you want a simple, flat foiled fin, get the K2. it's a super wide twin, so you're gonna want more fin area to help generate speed & drive in the conditions you're going to be riding it in & the aipas & T1 aren't going to give you that. there's a reason the fish was developed as a twin keel...drive & speed down the line. the "cut out" on the futures keels will give you a touch more maneuverability w/out sacrificing much in those departments. the V2 foil is a concave foil on the inside of the fin at the base, transitioning to flat foil as it moves toward the tip. this is intended to help create speed in mushy conditions while still keeping the release that flat foiled fins have. some folks like this, others don't. some can't tell the difference. honestly, i'd say if you can try them both via finatics, do it. if you can't tell the difference, buy which ever is cheaper.
