Damn, I never should've played that redic-ulous thing! Now I have the stupid tune stuck in my head.

 

i too just recently graduated college and im in career limbo. While i was in school on breaks and whenever i had free time off from school i would work in a sheet metal shop. after a year or so i began to pick up welding and found i have an abnormal talent for it. fast forward 4 years and even though i was part time most of my time there i am now in charge of all welding in the shop and i kinda enjoy what i do. while going through college and persuing my Business marketing degree i thought i wanted to go into advertising. I had a interview recently in a large manhattan firm and while i was in the lobby waiting i saw the people walking around looking miserable and looked at myself in my suit and just wondered "what the H*** am i doing here?" after knowing what i wanted to do for the past 2 years now i have no idea again. back to career limbo we go.

for now im sticking with the welding. besides long 70 hour weeks now and then and my boss up my ass from time to time its not a bad gig. i make great money and the shop is 5 minutes from my house. I also get to surf a considerable amount. as for the future i am now starting to think i want to go into business for myself doing something. i dont know what yet but something. if your gonna work your butt off why do it to make someone else money right?

I feel your pain man. im in the same boat. just enjoy every day like its your last and do what makes you happy.

I think it's appropriate that I post here because about 8-10 months ago I was pondering whether I should make the jump, change careers to live near the beach. I moved from Newark and well, it's more or less worked out. I took the job at Wallops Island as a Project Manager, and while I have a very long commute from Bethany, I get to hit Assateague whenever there are waves. My previous career I did ballistic testing for the Army which was a pretty sweet gig, but I saw that funding was getting cut and I was itching to move to the beach. Timing was perfect and this new job has worked out very well; I've been a big part of both of the last two launches there in September. I hope that this will be my career for the rest of my life.
Like others have said, take risks while you're young, and work your butt off. If you're good at what you do, you'll always be employed.

Yeah man i hear ya. Marketing still is a possibility but when i look around i find nothing that interests me and i get frustrated. Im considering opening my own welding shop and maybe building a truck for working in the field but honestly welding is really bad for your health and i dont know if its worth doing my whole life.

 

I actually drive trains for a living. All freight trains. Work for the largest railroad. Have done it for 8 years. Really love it except the schedule. But I can take off pretty much anytime the surf is good if I can afford it. Didnt go to college. Thinking about doing some online classes because the company I work for reimburses 100%. I'm on call 24/7 so it can be a drag but is great money. Live about an hour and a half from the beach.
Do something fun and crazy while your young. Once you settle down it gets harder.

 

You brahs are all pieces of work. Such a mosaic of different walks of life. We've got professions represented that I didn't even know were more than folklore or in Gaffer's comics. This is awesome stuff and I'm stoked to be on a forum with gentleman scholars like yous guys.

As for the yet-to-be-actualized braddahs or the ones that are too self-critical, follow your hearts brahs. Don't take no for an answer and if it doesn't break the law or hurt anyone, you should chase it with no relent. The buggahs here talking about sowing oats while you can are straight prophets. No regrets either, as those will weigh you down for life. Take it from a brah that's been looked at like a lunatic for years but then looks like a genius after the fact. Only you know what you need to do for you.

I'm all for living the life and sowing oats PROVIDED it's self funded. If you do it on mummy and daddys dime its just loser-ville.

 

For the past couple years I've been looking for a way out of corporate life. I've been a home brewer for some time so I wrote a bizz plan to start a small brewing co.

Question - can I hire everyone on this thread to help get it going? We'd have all the bases covered. Finance, marketing, advertising, logistics (our own train driver guy), security, welding (are your beads water tight?), sales, IT, etc. Forget a nano-brewery...let's just go straight to the mega brewery.

Perks: you'd be one mile from a break and your boss loves to surf. Need I say more? Whos with me!

 

Make sure you picked an untapped market. I know a commercial brewery in my area would be a tough thing to do right now. We have 5 operational breweries, and 3 coming in the near future. Personally, I would love to do a beachfront brewpub. Make small batch stuff and pair with a decent menu. Have a nice deck looking out onto the water. Dream big, that's what I do. Now I just need a millionaire investor.

Fair point, but you can spin it the other way too. There's a reason your market can sustain that many craft breweries...people there are into good beer. An untapped market could also be an undeveloped market, and developing a market can take years, even decades. I'm near Portland, ME, which is a very "tapped" market, pun intended. There is still market to be had for the right product positioned correctly. I'm shooting for the niche within the niche.

34th - consider yourself hired. Surfers make good employees, right? Ha! Oh yeah, the other perk, and it's a biggie, is all the delicious beer you can drink.

 

the scary thing with microbrews is that I think its super trendy right now but all trends fade.

 

if I could do it again, or just say eff it and switch careers, I'd be a yacht captain or a pilot or some sort.

 

Database engineering and architecture for a major ecommerce/retailer.
work from home mostly with flexible hours.
travel over to the left coast often, mostly bay area, bring my wetsuit and hit up ocean beach to santa cruz.
