This question may have been answered but here goes. Everywhere I have looked to research on west coast of PR looks like a right hand reef break. Are there any good lefts west cost or North coast? Also, Is La Selva a good break? Thanks,
La Selva is The Jungle. where's that? The best in CR is Boca Barranca and Punta Mala. In NC, used to be Hatteras jetty and between the point and frisco. False Cape, between Va and NC had a nice one.
there are a few "right" reefs that peel both ways in PR, depending on the swell direction, I.e. Pools reef, Domes (the break closer to the lighthouse, not the right off the rocks), I even see some lefts ridden at wildo's occasionally. I took a left at Maria's and got a good fast ride, but ended up in a pool of sea urchins and other pointy things. Chatarra is a sketchy shallow left on the north coast. why you need lefts?
Thanks for the info. Just not as good back hand with any size. And I don't want to bite it on the reef. Ive never surfed a reef, just wanted to be cautious. thank for your help though,

OK, here goes.. 1. Got to Puerto Rico. Rincon, Puerto Rico. 2. Rent a board. (Google Green Room surfboards, Rincon or go to DPSUP's guy) 3. Go to Marias beach. Park below the Calypso. 4. Walk out onto beach and turn left. (South) 5. Walk down until the beach widens in front of Stu's place. (It's big and yellow. Save money and rent it someday. I did. Stu's cool. But I digress) 6. Look for the wooden volleyball net posts. Enter water directly in front of posts. 7. Sit in the deep water before the break and look for two big concrete-looking things sticking out of the water. Those are the Pistons. 8. Watch the waves. Look for your left. 9 Do NOT, repeat do NOT get out of the water south of Stu's place or you will end up looking like a pin cushion. 10. You can also go to Marias near the point like Lee said. It has a decent left but you better bail before you get inside or once again, you guessed it, pin cushion.
I went to PR for the first time last winter. Stayed in Rincon at Rincon inn. The trip was a BLAST. I would have liked to stay closer to Pools and Tamboo for the nightlife, but you really can't complain when you're in PR. Had a serious pincushion incident at Marias. You really have to ask/watch where to get in get out. Once you start getting down to that point where they were talking about, it's literally urchin central. I got a few and it really sucked. As for lefts, I think I took off on maybe 5 lefts MAX in my 10 days there. The only place that I got a few was domes. Granted, I really didn't hit the north west portion too much, so I can't speak for that area, but the majority or Rincon and Aguadilla is rights. Also... Have a great time man. Wish I was going back this winter.
Nobody mentioned Sandy Beach yet? If it's working go there and hit the left right out in front of Tamboo, I've seen it barreling at 4-6ft+, easy access, rather safe compared to some other spots, and really fun, get on it early before wind picks up, unless you get lucky like I did on my first time down and it was good all day for 3 days straight
chaves, you talkin' about dogmans? Or further down towards steps? Just a caution that dogmans is very shallow. They say it has "teeth".
Thanks 34 and Dawn, Great reply. I do quite a bit of business on the east coast in Humacao. I thought I should try and take advantage at some point. Problem is I will most likely be solo.
How about little malibu? That is legit the shallowest water I've ever surfed, and there were 12 year olds throwing air reverse's over the little exposed urchins.
Dude if you frequent humacao check inches in Patillas. Always a left hander but breaks infrequently and usually small but I caught it 3-4 and was super fun. Yeah on the NW hit dogmans or pistons. There is actually another place to get out farther south than that one spot. I was there and got caught inside and the freakin rip was like 3-4 mph heading south and I couldn't get back to the keyhole as hard as I tried, I was gassed. Well some dude on the beach saw me looking for an exit and said follow me. He walked about a cpl hundred yards south and guided me in to a small keyhole, thank God. Wildo has a left but its mostly rights, still breaks left on some waves though. And as DPSUP said, sandys off the rocks will break left if conditions permit. I feel your pain as I'm a goofy footer too and always looking for some tasty lefts. On the other hand it sure helps polishing your backhand going to PR. I will be back down in Jan. Go get it. Oh yeah, I surfed La Pare, the wall at La Selva, ah it was ok, onshore and dumping, left and right. Now that reminds me, Aviones breaks left and right on the N coast, really fun but a shallow paddle out on low tide, fin scaping shallow. Go to www.wannasurf.com and check PR. Has like 100 spots in PR with GPS, local vibe, experience rating and left or right break.
Yo sandy's or better yet Antonio's a little north. Has a funky enter n exit. Good left or right. There's a parking lot at the enter n exit.

lefts are here, and they're usually shorter.. Overall, I'd say you'e going right probably 80-90% of the time. (I'm goofy foot and thought about "Backsider" for a screen name, but knew it'd be taken the wrong way.. Now, I'm worse going left, go figure, all these rights will do that.
stayed right behind tamboo at casa blanco it was a blast and inexpensive. right out front at sandy beach is a slab break thats a lefty but is fickle needs decent size. tamboo out front is a nice sandbar break for beginners but also good if your used to tearing up sandbars in either direction and like to get a close out section every now and then for the floatys and airs
