what airlines are you flying? I'm actually leaving for CR this Saturday and researched shipping costs, it was very very expensive $1,000+....and since I'm flying Delta they charge $300 for international one way....I ended up giving my boards to a buddy meeting me down there who is flying US Air, they only charge $100...you can definitely buy a board and try to sell it back when you leave CR, I know in Jaco you can do that pretty easily, not sure about up north in Tamarindo...good luck....oh and the drinking age in Costa Rica is 18 (to drink & buy) but its not strictly enforced so you can easily buy if you're underage.. Pura Vida

    Going on Dec. 6

I am going to CR in December as well, my 5th trip. Tamarindo is ok but you will have to either walk 2 miles to Grande, or drive to the good surf spots. If it is your first trip to CR you will have fun in Tamarindo. You can rent boards in Tamarindo if you want, but you run the risk of not being able to find a board that you like. If you decide to bring your boards, protect them as much as you can. Every time I have gone down there my boards have gotten dinged by airline personnel. I wouldn't worry about the drinking age, it is not enforced down there. Good Luck!

Don't go to Tamarindo!!! I don't know how advanced at surfing you are..but if you're some what decent and know what you're doing, stay away from that place!!!

There are so many nicer places and better waves and less crowded breaks all over. Just start researching every place there and choose one other than Tamarindo.

Hey Sundowner. Why do you miss Imperial?? Just go to a liquor store and get some. If you are local to the Lewes Rehoboth area or even within 45 mins you could go to Atlantic Liquors. They keep it in stock, somewhat. Depends how i am feeling.:) just call and ask if they have it ahead of time but they usually do.

I think you can rent a board for $10 a day. that may be the way to go if you'll only be there for a week. Oh, and Bavaria Oro is the best beer in CR. Have fun

Ya I am planning to go to Costa in March. I was looking at Tam but I think I might check into central costa now. It is a pain in the ass finding a flight to fly into Libra or whatever that other airports name is. If you fly into SJO it is a 4 hour drive to get over to Tam.

its true you can rent a board for about 10 bucks a day. during the slow season (now) you should be able to find something that suits you. spring is when your board options would be more limited. if any of you guys are thinking of staying near jaco, we have houses (not crappy little cabinas) for rent in Esterillos - which is like 15 min south from Jaco. we also offer tour guide services. check us out!

My parents bought a house here over 10 years ago. It is not the same...there is a huge hotel at Langosta, the locals hate gringos now, and there is a lot of crime in town. It used to be a fun place...there are still great waves around at Negra or Playa Grande, but you have to know your way around. It is all dirt roads which really get washed out in the rainy season....which is right now. Do not go in the water if it is raining, especially near an estuary. I got really sick a couple years ago because they do not really have a sewer system. If you are in town partying, just be careful. There is a reggae night at a Bar called Babylon...which may or may not be open. I do love the chicken rice and beans though...that has not changed!

I went to central coast last November. Hermosa and Dominical were never less than chest high sets. You won't be disappointed if you go to the central coast and surf Hermosa or Dominical. Both spots were so much fun.

Playa Grande is all paved roads. No more dirt roads.

watch the rentals in CR!! There are scams where shops rent boards that are poorly made so of course you break them and have to pay the shop the full board cost. I will NEVER rent a board on a surf trip ever!

Ya I know it can be done but the sucky part is for March I am seeing flights to Liberia for like $580-$800 from NJ/NY/PHL and to SJO for only $352 if you figure in a charter plane or a drive it might actually equal the same amount as a plane ticket straight to Liberia but I have not really figured out the number yet.
