So I just signed a contract to purchase my first house. Pretty stoked! Although there about 100 higher priority projects I'll need to tackle first, I'd eventually like to put in my own little surf space/workshop where I can store boards/gear, repair dings, etc. Anyone have pics of a setup you are proud of? Looking for some inspiration.
Congratulations on the purchase. Must feel good. Get every tool known to man and DIY for most. Saves you money and is a fun hobby that can take your mind off the BS.
Great job on a new home. Get tools like e mass said. An easier project space is a large outdoor shed. Ya can get kits or draw up your own. That way ya don't trash ur garage! Run electricity to it or just drop a couple cords. Have fun with it. If ya see any cabinets at the curb pick em up. Great for storing stuff in your hobby shop, and they r free. Your buds will always have a reason to come over and have a few. Good luck!
Congrats on the house. So much nicer than moving every couple of years. Just so ya know, if the [insert DIY repair item here] says it fits 99% of the similar items out there.....it won't.
If you're buying tools, make sure you buy good ones. My favs: Makita, Porter Cable and Bosch. They make lifetime tools.
Thanks guys. Definitely trying to go the DIY route as much as possible. My little bro is gonna be living with us for a while to I'll have an extra set of hands when I need them. I know it's gonna be a headache but I'm actually pretty excited for all the projects... would much rather learn about and build something than sit in front of the TV. Funny, I guess I've been googling garage storage solutions or something, because now all the adds that pop up on the right side of my screen are for pegboard workbenches and modular garage wall shelving. Imagining what they would look like with an integrated surf rack. The shed idea is a good one, have been thinking about that too. All comes down to priorities b/c most of my $ will be sunk into the down payment.
Truth. Makita and Bosch are my favs especially for more heady duty ones like hammer drills and concrete saws. Although, I'm a big fan of Harbor Freight Tools for things like impact drivers and small jigs. They cost dirt, are fairly durable, and as soon as they break you go get a new one for nothing if you spend the $2 or so for the lifetime warranty. Basically, you can keep breaking it then getting a new one gratis. Get a solid Husky or Craftsman storage unit(s). Taking care of your tools is as important as buying the right ones.
as far as hand tools go (wrenches, socket sets, and screwdrivers) go craftsmen for sure. they have lifetime warrantees, not that you should need them. i have a few sets of trashy tools i keep in my truck or used to take to the race track that are stanley and husky and have broken and bent multiple tools in the sets. My craftsmen set is till going strong. The general rule of thumb with tools is you get what you pay for.
First little project in the books, had to show it off! Eventually this wall is to become the 'wall of shred', home to all my surf/snow/skate related gear. For now just needed something functional to start with.
