I'm interested in taking my wife (who is a relatively new surfer) and small child this winter, probably February or March. We are looking for a place where we may be able to find a daytime babysitter and have a variety of breaks nearby. Has anyone been to Morro Negrito surf camp? It's a private island with 5 or 6 different breaks and an all-inclusive deal. Thanks for taking a minute to read this. ~Drew
How much is this place? Some shaky reviews on Tripadvisor.com. Have you checked into surfsimply.com in CR?
$100/day with 3 squares. I know the folks at Surf Simply and the break where they are based. In fact, the wife and I got married on the beach there, but that's another story. Good folks for sure at SS. I am intrigued about the private island with multiple breaks, but will definitely check out tripadvisor's reviews.
Can't beat that price. Have always wanted to go up the coast to the wilder, less populated breaks of Panama. There's one resort run by an American chica who bailed on the wealthy gringo life, located near really good waves, way off the beaten path, but I can't recall the name of it. Anyways, good travels sorry I couldn't help.
i've been to morro negrito 2x, most recently in 2009, & would never, ever take my wife there. even if she surfed. it's "rustic", if you know what i mean. also, since my last visit, the owner (steve) & his panamanian wife have had an ugly divorce, w/ their son siding w/ the wife & basically seizing control of morro negrito. steve has been forced to open a new camp around the corner on another island & since it's just starting out, it's super primitive. i've also heard stories since of morro negrito where guys aren't being picked up at the dock for the boat ride to the island & basically just sitting all week, never surfing. it sucks, b/c i always got great waves when i was there, but i'm not sure i'd go back at the moment. the whole situation is sketchy IMO. also, feb-march is really NOT the best time for surf on that stretch of coast. & given that morro negrito is tucked a bit inside gulfo chiquiri, it's very possible that it'll be completely flat. if you really want to go, book for april-september. or go carribean side. much more consistent at the time of year you're looking at (or so i'm told...never surfed over there). i've heard bocas del toro is pretty wife/girlfriend friendly & am looking into taking my wife there w/ my next summer (july/august-ish).
second that on morro negrito....went in 06 SUCKED go to the Caribbean side in winter if you want real surf, it you want some dribblers and to eat old goat and hardly surf go to Morro negrito
I went to Morro Negrito 10 or 11 years ago and it was great - for me any my buds. I'd never take my wife and kid, they'll ruin your good time. When I went, there's NOTHING to do but surf, eat, and chill. ~Brian www.greenlightsurfsupply.com Shape Your Surfing Experience
Anybody know about other places in Panama that could be good for family with a couple of different breaks nearby?
