I am going to southern california in late december this year. I am an intermediate surfer and I have never gotten barreled. I surf the jersey shore and the waves tend to suck there. Where is the best break for solid waves and maybe even some barrels

The best Cali barrels are up North. Anything around Frisco barrels nearly constantly in December. So consider up there.

Still... EL Porto/Manhattan isn't bad. The only issue there is the jellyfish problem, which has only gotten worse lately. But I'll let you in on a secret that locals and biologists use. Get a couple of cans of tuna (in oil, not water!), and spread the oil on your wetsuit. This naturally deters the jellies, whose worst enemy is tuna.

This will work on NorCal breaks too....

Have an awesome time getting barrelled. I'm jealous....

Doheny. Just paddle straight out. Don't even check it first.

Wow! Your advice is to rub fish oil on his wetsuit and paddle out in Great White territory so he doesn't get a jellyfish sting?!! Genious. More bad avice on this site.

Want barrels. You can expect any CA barrel in Dec to be packed. There are tons of barrels in NJ and very forgiving. Best advice is to find a beach break similar to NJ surf that CA don't bother with. You'll avoid crowds like the one recommended and get practice without hassel. You'll find ignored waves in CA to be better than crowded NJ spots and make for fun no stress sessions. You want big beaches with peaky sections, not crowded points with great waves and hassels. Sorry I will not name beaches.

SoCal? ... I would say any of the Trestles breaks, especially Lowers ... in your case, you may also want to look into Uppers or Cottons to get the wave count up and not compete with some of the best surfers in the area for waves. It's not a "barreling" wave, but it has a really awesome open face that is so fun to rip on.

brah, the waves there are so much better- you will not even have to worry about barrels! so much fun!

Just go and explore! Not many ppl on here will tell you good spots that arnt crowded, cause that's just the way it goes.... you'll find the spots!

ha, this or go to blacks during a big NW and get pounded by some huge clean up sets. seriously just look at surfline, you won't be welcome at most spots, especially the ones that aren't on surfline.

I would def hit the North County SD breaks....Del Mar...Encinitas ,Leucadia. I lived in Leucadia which bumps into Carlsbad just to the North and surfed in small crowds often. Stone steps and Grandview (Leucadia) are two mellow breaks and fairly easy to find. You will love the place trust me...it spoils ya quik ! Oh, I would also recommend Sunset Cliffs in Southern San Diego. It's an awesome left hand reef break covered in eel grass and can reel for hundreds of yards. Just watch people enter and exit the break as it can be a lil sketchy off the rocks to get out and leave later....Enjoy!
