I think I cursed the east coast by moving back from CA last fall. I was only here from October on, but aside from Sandy last year, both fall seasons were pretty much trash.

Disclaimer. I did surf this morning and it was fun. Chest high and pretty clean. So, I can't completely complain, but that is all that its been for two years straight. Sometimes fun. Mediocre sized days. I guess I don't get too angry though, because with all the flatness and stuff, anything ridable becomes fun to me. So sad. If I have the time and money, I will make a mid-winter trip back to San Diego for a week or 10 days and get my stoke-tank refilled.

zach619, you're far too humble. Please post more often. Because of you, I only wear a leash in winds greater than 22mph, critical wave height of 6'+ (eastern scale), or power in excess of 500 kJ. Seriously, brah, you are a righteous dude and one of the many I learn a ton from by reading your posts. Let's get you more active here. I pledge to withhold 5 posts for every 1 you put up. That goes for all yous udder heroes, too. You know who you are.

Sweet! Now all I need is for the forum to let me know where to surf, when exactly, what board, which fins to use, what kind of wetsuit, what thickness, how to clean my diseased wetsuit when I'm done, what to eat after, who's your favorite football team, and will there mermaids in the line up?
These waves are gonna be so good, mermaid permitting, I can't wait. I'm gonna ride 671 waves in 2014, 203 of those waves will be tubes.

Completely agree//...following the worst summer ever. 2013 has been a complete and total bust. Maybe it'll thin the herd....? :)

This summer was far from the worst, i surfed at least twice a week almost the entire summer, but i agree it wasn't spectacular by any stretch of the imagination....worst fall...definitely, two little storms that resulted in sub-par waves, winter has to be good this year....or maybe it won't and we will just suffer more.

I did get on it on Monday, but I'd have to say the swell we got two or three weeks ago was a lot better...i think it was the first week of November...that swell was good size, about head high and had some good power behind it....that Friday evening sesh was probably the best since the friday we got a nice sized swell the beginning of September....

Koki, Allah bless you for you rationality and ability to know reality.

I have no clue why people rag this past summer. The only thing I can think of is that they have only been surfing for a few years and got accustomed to having hurricane swells arrive like clock work in mid-August. And hurricanes don't define the summer season anyways.

June was actually pretty darn good. July, the wettest July in my region ever, had 1-2 clean little waist+ swells per week. And I forget aboot August, but I reckon it was much like July.

July isn't supposed to be good. South Africa is good in July but Virginia Beach, Dewey Beach, Deal, Lido, 'Gansett, and Hampton isn't. The summer is supposed to be lackluster around here you nitwits. That's why you appreciate one of them South wind, foggy, upwelling summers. Jeez, June and July in 2011 were completely flat as far as I could tell. I was trapped in a building in Mays Landing, NJ those two months but I kept tabs. I KEPT TABS.

I don't even remember the summer of 2012 so it couldn't have been any better than this past summer. All I remember is that the canes started right after Labor Day which was just great. Yeah September of 2012 was good. Leslie and some other storm, plus two good cold front swells(one being the crop of the month) made for a consistent month. But the weekend crowds were atrocious. SCRAM !! GO AWAY !! Go golfing or rock climbing or ride your bike............

And YOU, you Son B!tch.......the one who only shows up in September on easy 3 foot clean days and acts like he's King Royality because he grew up in town. You only surf when the weather's warm, the water's warm and it's clean and easy. I have way more respect for someone who's on it all year from King of Prussia, PA. YOU Son of B!tch.

And YOU, the one who teaches their kids how to surf and paddles them out at the most crowded spot on the island and right into the pack. YOU Son of a B!tch. Then they get mad at ME because their kid obliviously starts paddling for a wave I'm already on. All I did was just go around him. I didn't DO NOTHING !! Don't give me a look. Don't stare at me if you ain't going to do anything when I stare back. You son of a B!tch.

And YOU, the one who paddles out and then sits RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. WHAT ARE YOU FRIGGIN THAT CLUELESS.......

AND YOU, YOU SUP GUYS.........Pick a peak/area and STAY PUT. STOP PADDLING NORTH AND THEN SOUTH AND THEN NORTH AND THEN SOUTH...........YOU MAKE ME DIZZY AND GIVE ME THE JITTERS.

AND YOU, novice kayakers..........YOU CAN'T CONTROL YOUR CRAFT.......DON'T PADDLE OUT INTO A CROWD. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE WHERE YOU WON'T RUN PEOPLE OVER.

AND YOU, the hotshot teen.........IT'S TWO FOOT !! STOP PADDLE BATTLING PEOPLE FOR A TWO FOOT WAVE !!! TAKE A FRIGGIN VALIUM OR SOMETHING. OR STOP SMOKING PCP BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT IN A HEAT AGAINST GARY ELKERTON TRYING TO GET PRIORITY. IT'S A FRIGGIN TWO FOOT DAY IN FRIGGIN NEW JERSEY.

some people take these flatspells too personal, like god told the sea to stop working.its weather dude,we cant control it.lately iv been losin my stoke for surfing, hoping a good trip will set me straight since jersey has nothing on offer.i work near the beach so I drive past everyday n while theres little rideable 2footers,im not interested til its atleast chest to head high plus.

and can anyone enlighten me about this alleged big storm we are supposed to get near thanksgiving.iv surfed thanksgiving plenty of times with epic waves but I see nothing on the systems.i wouldn't consider 3ft epic.would be nice,i think its because we had such an epic winter last yr thanks to sandy,i think since we had no hurricanes this yr,we mght be in for a brutal winter

    Mr. Cep,

There is something personal aboot the latest conditions. Something ain't right. Hey I hear Archy and MIS-13 believe that the U.S. government is controlling the weather and creating devestating storms in other parts of the world. Therefore, it has screwed-up normal east coast weather conditions resulting in bunk surf and crazy people who depend on waves to keep them somewhat sane and off the corners. I don't know, but that's what I hear.

And.......aboot this big Thanksgiving storm. I believe the surf predicting gods had forecasted a bigger swell a few days ago. I'm not sure, but I think so. I don't really pay attention that far out. Even when I do look at the forecast, I only pay attention to the approaching 48-72 hours. But I do believe I saw a legitimate bulge in the graph for next Thursday.

Surprisingly, that forecast has been updated. And true to the way things are going, it has been downsized. But who knows, things may change again.

Ahhh, remember the days when Thanksgiving and Christmas offered up some goods, more often than not. I do.

Douglas, you just wait for my Damien Hardman and Bryce Ellis references...............I might get crazy and throw a Charlie Kuhn reference out there someday, too.

I've had some pretty fun days myself this fall. Nothing that blew me away but fun. Hell this past Sunday evening, I was getting chest high glassy nug nugs all to myself. That was however, after all the inlanders went home for the week. Got some glassy nugs one day this week.. Maybe chest-shoulder on the peak.. Nothing long but nice and wedgy.. Bottom line is if you are at the beach and Johnnie on the spot, there have been waves

Kong! Love it. Anybody old enough to remember Elko (and Tom Carroll, Shaun Tomson, Occy and a bunch of others who shouldn't be surfing knee high mush) surfing the ASP Tour "wavepool" event in Allentown, PA.

    That was some funny Sh!t.

All in all it has been far from epic, but servicable down here. Crowded too. The onshores are scrambling up a decent swell ( fading chest to waist high ) today. Last Wednesday had decent size and zero wind for a magical hour or three, and yes if you were in the right spots at the right time some quality was offered up by the wave gods. Nothing heartstopping, or even heart starting. Except the neccesity to duck dive over and over and over. Not complaining, just observing. Oh, I almost forgot, I thought I saw Todd Holland carving it up at the Pier the other day. Maybe it was Cheyne Horan. What ever happened to Johnny Boy Gomes, is he like doing hard time or wot?

I guess you took last spring off from surfing. Because there was a 2.5 week stretch where no one can argue that it wasn't cranking daily. Straight up going off. It's not like I'm prone to have an absent heartbeat or suspect adrenal glands, but why do you think I got so stoked on surfing? Because the constant swell grabbed me by the jugular and said come hither. Maybe you were in a coma last April and May. If so, I'm glad you're feeling better. Now, if you ever get that flux capacitor working again you'll want to put April 15th, 2013 in the control panel and pack enough provisions for about three weeks.

Glad we got that straightened out. This year has NOT been a bust. We've endured periods of hardship, but if you've hit your break when you've supposed to, you've got your doors blown off more than enough times this annum.

Yup this spring was one for the record books.. which is why people are having such bad withdrawal symptoms right now. There were several stretches of time that were O-Head and clean. A lot of the breaks in my area were set up just right, a lot of places that I hadnt surfed in years.

Lots of accuracy there. It was clean. These weren't just big days, they were clean too. Not gonna cry over spilled milk and wish back the clean faces from then before I was even getting down the line and into faces. They were so clean many days that I was getting takeoffs I otherwise wouldn't and making the drop even if it was straight to the beach. You also mention breaks setting up just right. True that. There were sand bars hitting back then that I haven't even seen a bump on since.

Nature seeks balance so it would've been foolish to think we'd not have a backlash after the floodgates. I knew it then and am ok with it now. You guys have been at this a long time. I know you've seen drier periods come and go and your world was still rocked again and again when the prodigal swell returned. Any day now that can happen again. Keep your paddle muscles ready.
