Mornin Seldom, The turd you saw may have been a feral dog which is a domestic dog gone wild. The debate about Mountain Lions in PA and NJ, although cooled off recently, was big topic of discussion in hunter and outdoor news. Lots of people claiming eyewitness sightings but no physical proof until some kid in the suburbs of Philly video taped one. It was a Mountain Lion but it had escaped from an illegal game preserve. Those game preserves are where a bunch of rich people pay to hunt exotic (Lions, Big Horn Sheep, Boar, etc) and non-native species of game right here in NJ and PA. It's not hunting, it basically killing a wild animal in a controlled environment. One day, I'm going to hunt the rich a$$-hats that do this.
Top o' the marin to you sir, yeah that turd was so startling to me that I had to go back with a ruler and take pics...I'm no scat expert but you could tell it was a good sized meat eating critter. Agreed wholeheartedly on the game preserves, not real hunting, and poses potential serious problems. The hunt you mention would be worthwhile. The mountain lion issue definitely interests me. A lady I used to work with, avid backpacker/outdoors person, told me she saw a cougar chasing a black bear on the Long Trail in VT...and she knew what she was talking about cuz the first thing she mentioned was the size/long tail. Was in northern ME and heard of sightings on the dept of fish and game radio channel...makes me wonder if there's a few stragglers in the Adks, northern Apps, etc. Either way, definitely don't wanna cross paths with one of those guys.
what a tattle tale b!tch the moderator will judge what is a reasonable issue and what isn't, he doesn't need the class b!tch to cry about it
survival of the fittest. not reading these 10 pages of *****ing and moaning. wolves are not dogs. they will literally rip your face off and **** on your remains. they are a threat to any outdoorsman and should be treated with the upmost caution. disagree? go try to feed a hungry pack. please share your results.
Seldom Seen, Didn't mean to sound off as a smart a$$ just the comparison of wolves & sharks my own (sic) satire You're right the about the 2 year season so will fill in some of the blanks for you of the prior 10 years as it was a difficult journey to say the least. Dept of Interior introduced Wolves mating pairs in the Rocky Mountain States around 1993-1995. Then early 2002-2003 wildlife data (stock counts) were decreasing much faster over previous years (pre-wolves). The high morality rate of Elk, Mule Deer, Whitetail deer etc drew concerns of Game Management, Ranchers and Outfitters. Cattle Ranchers were also experiencing higher losses too. Wolves not like coyotes prey on much larger animals in the food chain. So if higher morality rates of wildlife off spring fall victim to wolf predation then life cycle of wildlife future stocks are interrupted. So during this time span Wolves were Federal Protected so all parties affected by increased predation were impendent to off set the losses. A rancher in Wyoming inspecting his cattle herd found 3 dead calf's then off in the distance saw the wolf who preyed on his cattle. The Ranchers shot the wolf then drove it many miles away from the scene and buried it. The Rancher fate was sealed, the Wolfe was wearing a satellite neck collar the Feds used to track wolves migration. When the Feds observed lack of movement they located the buried wolf with its GPS tracking devise. The Rancher was charged Federally killing an "in danger ed specie". This sent shock waves through the "Rockies" Ranching industry. who by now had enough. So from around 2005 through 2010 "parties" sought relief through the Federal Courts to stop the wolf re-introduction program and De-List wolves off the Endangered Species list. The Plaintiffs were successful except HSUS million dollar war chest filed "injunctions" and were granted "stays" of lower court ruling. So after 5 years of battling with HSUS in the courts the "science" prevailed to allow State's the ability to manage harvest (hunting season) for wolves IE (removal off protection list). I followed this "case" as comparison of another similar project at the time. HSUS is a tough opponent with deep pockets that infuriated Rocky Mountain Regional interests. I was attending another Hearing, that HSUS was a Plaintiff, the only good word for Wayne, President of HSUS, his Chief Lobbyist was "breathtaking", she was a beauty, no wonder this thing dragged out so long, you couldn't get enough of her.
All good Goofy Footer, no offense taken. I appreciate the details leading up to the current situation. And while I'll say it begrudgingly, I do understand the need to manage populations. That being said, I do not support de-listing and I do not trust the intentions or integrity of a lot of these guys that end up with tags...case in point the guy that just shot a man's malamute multiple times while he was walking it, and it was leashed. I fear the lynch mob mentality behind all of this.
I wanted to quote myself to try to be like NZSM. Not really, just wanted to re-post this link, it's the guy whose mal was killed while he was walking it.
The thread is going in circles by people who can't handle that someone has different values/opinions/beliefs than them. We have different values. You people choose to live in a delusional/hypocritcal world where animals are above people, so people can't defend themselves from animals, but it's ok if the animals kill people. And they deserve the death penalty. Oh and at the same time, other types of non predatory animals are fine to be slaughtered by people. My mom is more important than my dog, but your mom is less important than dogs. That kind of sums it up. Oh and the discussion is about wolves, not dogs or prehistoric animals....wtf? It's the Lunatic fringe.
There are always idiots in every group. Most hunters are pretty zealous about safety and conservation.
Im stoked on all the good science being posted, it is hard to have a good conversation, just have to filter through all the opinions and there are some good facts. We all were born here, we all own Earth, and we want the natural system to be productive. It is in our best interest to protect the naturally occurring dangerous animals, the flora, the insects, the birds. They all play their part. God Bless America and the Founding Fathers.

Watching this episode of Yukon Men, I saw a wolf that was posing no immediate threat, shot from a couple hundred yards away. It was doing it's own thing on the edge of a frozen lake and certainly not stalking human prey. I saw one other wolf frozen and chained to a tree with traps on its ankles. Again the wolf was doing his own thing and tried to eat a piece of meat in the branches and wasn't stalking human prey. Prior to this a group of men organized to go on a wolf murdering mission because they found tracks in the area and had an upcoming local sled dog race. The sled dogs spend their lives tied to a wooden box outside (in the frozen Yukon) or pulling a sled, while being dragged around by the scruff of their necks between the two. One of the sled dogs had a seizure while the dog team was pulling. It got dragged for a bit while having said seizure. The driver unhooked the dog, (still having a seizure) dragged it by the scruff of it's neck, stuffed it into a bag on the sled, and continued racing. You know, the good life, "happier than your average spoiled dog". Side note: my 10 year old dog who is undoubtedly my best friend, had a seizure 7 days prior to watching this show. It never happened before, I didn't know what was happening or what to do. I was scared sh*tless holding my first mate in my arms then on the floor while she/we went though it. 5:00 am Sunday morning to boot (at least I was home). Since I didn't know what was happening at the time I thought I might lose her right then. So lame, a traumatic experience for all to say the least. The mentality exhibited on this show plays a critical role in our planets current dilapidated condition. Conservation and protection of air, water, nature (including every living thing), and natural processes is of utmost planetary importance. It's shameful that some people need a scientific study to determine whether another living things life is worth living. Who are we to be so judgmental? Humans have effectively downgraded or eliminated the homes and environments of most animals on the planet, in turn affecting our own quality of life. Everything is connected via a complex web of evolutionary happenings. All living things are critical links in a closed chain (it goes in a circle and recycles itself) that have perpetuated our existence. Breaking a link in this chain would be detrimental to continued human existence in general. Breaking many links in the chain will inevitably put humans on the endangered species list and ultimately lead to our own extinction. We need to care for and respect all animals, even the ones we're uncomfortable with, trees (for hugging), plants, lakes, rivers, oceans, in order to continue our own happy healthy human existence. It's common sense but society is brainwashed about many things, that being one of them. Dangerous animals should be dealt with accordingly not ignorantly i.e. If you or some one else is about to square off with snarly or rabid wild animal, by all means do what you have to do. If you live in an area where a known potentially dangerous animal also resides you learn to coexist and be prepared for any potential confrontation or leave the area. Wastefully targeting an animal because of its potential danger is useless and just putting another screw in the f*ck the world coffin. If your going to sled dog race in Alaska you should bring a gun in case of the rare wildlife/human altercation. Fearing the local wildlife doesn't give you the right to go on some ye haw hick critter killin spree. Wastefully killing animals because they're competing for the same food source as you is ridiculous as well. Trying to eat the same thing as another being doesn't validate killing the competition in my opinion. Especially considering humans are the cause of lacking resources not innocent animals like coyotes. If I found a dangerous wild animal in my yard or the vicinity I would try to safely take a photo of it not shoot it. If it seemed in any way threatening I would posture back with loud noise, big stance, pots and pans to scare it out of my zone. If that didn't deter the animal enough I would shoot next to it. If it was surely rabid, night night. If you have kids, educate them. If your kids are small watch them. Use your head and teach your children to use theirs. You wouldn't give your kids the car keys, send them out on the much more deadly highway without guidance, blame the experienced drivers for the accident, and shoot them dead because they're a danger to you and your child's ignorance, right? I wouldn't kill unless I or someone else is in immediate danger. Guns, weapons, and other technology come with great responsibility for they give us an unfair advantage in the animal kingdom. This unfair advantage created a tremendous imbalance of animal resources because humans lacked the responsibility that came with said advantages and we still do. Humans typically view the world within hundred year time lines and what happened in the past and what happens in the future doesn't really have anything to do with right here, right now. Realistically we live on time lines that extend trillions of years in either direction. Treating this planet and all of its inhabitants, plant life and landscape included, with anything less than the highest level of respect and conservation is ungrateful, selfish, foolish, ignorant, careless, insane, genocidal and so on. It took a lot of cosmic ingredients over a ridiculous amount of time to make the one in a billion trillion miracle planet earth survivable for human beings and we sh*t all over it like it's a disposable diaper. Absurd. We'll just find another planet for our great great great grand kids to live on once we finish destroying this one? Absurd. This planet is ultimately going to succumb to some form of cosmic destruction (could be tonight or 2 billion years)? True. Having a who gives a sh*t, f*ck the world, it's all about me attitude is what got us here, and a p.o.s. cop out. Thanks for that . Hypothetically speaking imagine these two scenarios: Your watching Big Cat Diary and a leopard family is doing its thing while the biologists commentate from their closely parked open vehicle. Suddenly while watching them eat, one of the biologists has this incredibly genius revelation that leopards are potentially dangerous to humans. They all pull out rifles and murder every leopard in sight. J-Bay is about to start and a bunch of shunt types go out and attempt to cull the local shark population to accommodate a yearly surf competition. We are so technologically advanced yet we simultaneously behave in the most sophomoric of ways. We know too much to not take full responsibility and give our best to make good on what we've ruined out of respect for the gift of life (all of it). Anything less is simply a cut your nose to spite your face scenario. Humans are the most dangerous and destructive animals out there and we're the ones that need population control considering the damage we've done to everything else. (That's not a murder threat you shark fin soup providing, poor reading comprehension having shunt). We owe it to ourselves, our past selves, our future selves, and all other living things to extremely change how we roll. We are the f*ck ups and we have the technology and brain power to not be such a failure, yet we continue down an outdated foolish path. We have the gift of conscience with some understanding of necessary balance and need to employ this special gift much more effectively. I care about all living things and their environments including dangerous animals and misguided hick mentality having humans (present and future). I'm always looking to improve my way of being and try to have an open yet logical mind. I seek positivity and fairness for living things including humans d*ck weed. Eat or be eaten is part of what's fair. I release most of the fish I catch and feel bad cutting their gills when I keep them but not guilty at all for eating them. I still respect the fish. I also respect the fact that I'm not number 1 when I'm bobbing on my surfboard. I'm confident that my appreciation for life doesn't make me insane or a bad person and shark hunting types are undoubtedly much closer to that mark. Are my ideals unrealistic? If the shark finning, money first, questions later mentality continues, my ideals are indeed unrealistic. Thank you seldom and the others who defended this bs fire while I was scrambling at work. I didn't expect so much ignorance. I'm off to the zoo now. I want to try making out with a lion and fingering a bull shark after sharing a hoagie with them.
