+1. The truth is you can be content doing anything regardless of your education, but there's little downside to getting your learn on. Figuring out why you didn't like something is as important as figuring out why you like something.

I don't really care. My advice, don't try drugs, don't drink, work your ass off.

I drink, do drugs, and sleep till 11 every day.

I did graduate though. Go to Stockton dude, its easy, you can surf all you want. Join the rowing team there I'll hook you up. (I rowed).

What should you do with your life? Be happy, really happy, not chemically happy. Find a person you love and you will never ask that question again. Work out. Go to school and work, get it done, you don't want to be the old dude going to college class. Your not Bill Gates. Go to school do your research on your major and get it done. If you join the military use it to subsidize your education. The job market sucks. I went to school thinking they would be giving out 100,000 a year jobs like candy, no one is. But with out a degree your locked into long hours for beans. Literally beans. Not bad now, enough for a new surfboard and maybe a trip and all the BK you want, but 20 years from now it won't do.

So basically, it matters. Do the right thing. Whatever that may be.

    LISTEN TO EROCK.

If you don't know what you want to do or study, community college is just fine. Get GOOD GRADES in community college, and then, if you want, you can continue on with your Bachelors degree. Hopefully by then you will have figured out what you want to do, but if not, no biggie. Community college degrees are cheap. YOU CAN DO IT.

Trust me. Personally, I have screwed around a lot, still have some student debt, and chose a major that is tough to make money with. But I still make more money than all of my GED/highschool-diploma-only friends. Get an education, and if you can, do it in some computer sh*t. The housing market busts, electricians and plumbers end up out of work. Learn the secret computer codes and set yourself free. No one wants to climb on a roof when they're 50. Or 30.

Someone's dad said that joining the Air Force was the greatest thing he ever did. Well, I have a friend who says that it's the WORST thing he ever did. He joined up to get ahead in Nursing, and his recruiter lied to him and painted a pretty picture of a Nursing 'career' that never happened. They will say anything to get you in.

    1) Go to community in SD with your buds.
Study Comp-sci, English, and Spanish. Get some certifications.

    2) Enjoy the amazing surf and plow away at the local female population. As Druncle Jim said, DO NOT KNOCK ANYONE UP.

    3) Graduate Community college and go teach English/work at a Hostel/School in Central or South America.

    4) You've already lived an interesting life. Congratulations. At this point you will know what's next.

    P.S.

    -Do not get into cocaine.

-Do not worry about your friends, they'll probably end up losers anyway. In 5 years none of them will skate. If they are really your friends they will tell you to go on an adventure.

-Do not forget... You can't drop out of the military.

join the military air force gets best of everything, coast you'll do detail for a year or so before you go to a school but probably has the best potential . maybe the reserves is good for you get 500 a month from the guard and 100% tuition based on state, so you also get all your fin aid back in cash which is a nice 2-3g a semester. personally i hate the reserves biggest mistake of my life not to do a 4 year.

Although SI Forum may not be the best source for career/life guidance counseling, there are no doubt those here who have experienced what you are currently going through.
This can be a very overwhelming, confusing, and frustrating period of your life. Bear in mind that many people end up with careers in fields very different from what they studied in college. You likely feel relentlessly pressured to decide, despite your limited experience and knowledge, what you want to do for the rest of your life. But this is also a time offering so much potential and possibilities if you take advantage of the opportunities available to you. You have freedom now that you will very likely not have later. Then again, too many options can make decisions difficult. In earlier times, one worked on the family farm or ended up in the mines, mills, or factories - like father like son. Choices were simpler then.
    My other thoughts:
    1. Consider your interests and aptitudes. Other than surfing, what do you like to do or have an interest in that might be expanded upon and perhaps turned into a productive occupation?
    2. What are your options? This includes the financial situation. What resources are available to fund your education? Is your family able to pay for it, or are you on your own? Are there schools (community college, university, trade schools) in your area?
    3. There are many who benefit from the structure the military provides. But you'll be going to school there too, if you want to make something of yourself. Military training and duties are demanding. These come first and foremost. Surfing will remain at the bottom of the list for quite awhile.
    4. If you're smoking a lot of weed, cut back or lay off the stuff altogether. Too much makes you lazy and stupid. It can reduce your motivation and keep you from performing to your potential. Many jobs have drug testing and screening. They don't want potheads working for them.
    5. If not a 4-year degree, check out the trades: IT, health care, medical technology, electrical/electronics, welding, etc.
    6. If the gang you're hanging out with is holding you back, it's time to move on.
    7. College is a great place to meet women and provides a "target rich environment". But use protection.
    8. Your goal should be to become a productive member of society - preferably in something you generally like doing and can take pride in. You want to be able to adequately support yourself and not be a burden to others. Then you can fit in the surfing.

Lot of ppl saying to go to school - all your surfing brahs- I would take it seriously hearing it from them. Checkout a tech school- it's not as much boring study and it's easy. Checkout devry- it's a tech school but you get a university degree!! Plus it's close to many surf areas- and you can surf as much as you want. They have afternoon classes - you can surf all morning

College is not worth it unless you get a very specialized degree. That horse-sh!t about earning potential doesn't apply anymore. Best bet is to learn a trade if you are so inclined since skilled trades people are going to be be the big money makers in the future.

Yeah, I tell my wife this all the time. She always feels stupid because she never went to college. I just tell her that the real idiots are the people that blow $50k+ just to get a worthless bachelors in communication or psychology. Tech schools are much more useful for most people. Just make sure you know what you want to to for a living before starting school. I made that mistake and wasted a year of my college life.

I second the above. If you have an ounce of hardworking bone in your body, you will make a decent $ and live somewhat comfortably. Where does the OP live at? The Apprentice School in Hampton Roads is a good example of a tech school.

If you are going to try a tech school I highly reccomend going to get your Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license. Working on airplanes is much cooler, cleaner, higher paying and you will be recruited after 2 years of school. Amoung others, good schools can be found in Teterboro, NJ and Daytona Beach, FL (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Univ).

You will need to drop the drugs or you could lose your job after all the schooling...

    Good luck!

If only I had a time machine...

Do what you love, the money will come! Don't waste your time trying to go to school to get a job you will be sick of in a year. It maybe a high paying job but then that's all you end up doing in life. No time for family, surfing, doing the things you love because you are too busy with the career.

So buy a bad of the finest xmas trees, roll a nice big honker up, go down to the beach and burn the whole damn thing! Then sit there and think of all the avenues of surfing in which you can make money. Doesn't have to be a lot of money, just something that you are going to absolutely love and be able to survive on to begin with. Think outside the box.... that's what the trees are for!

    Good luck!!!
