Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and to the sport. Been surfing the whole summer/fall in Long Beach, learning the ropes but I'm starting to get curious about other spots in Long Island. What can you tell me about going to Smith's Point when it's not summer? The reports from Swellinfo.com always show bigger waves there than Long Beach so I was thinking of giving a try this weekend, just want to do my homework before I go. Thanks!
I haven't been there in over a year, but it was a lot of close outs. In the past it only really broke on the bigger days and still closed out a lot, but when it was good it was the place to be. Let me know how it breaks if you go, I am always wondering about going back, but hesitate to "waste" the drive.
Its all beach break so it will be different than the jetties at LB. You just park in the parking lot and walk over to the beach. Off season so there isnt any parking fees.I don't usually go there but after Sandy it was one of the only spots open...so the last time I surfed there was in mid November 2012. Not sure how the bars are now... I paddled out just to the left of the Flight800 memorial but there are spots all up and down the beach.. just head out and find yourself a peak. EDIT: you may also want to try Gilgo, it is probably closer to you and a little more user friendly with the cams and surf reports.
The only time I've surfed Smith's was Thanksgiving week of last year. I paddled out where Oldsoul did, on a decent-sized day; it was a mess as far as rips and channels go, thanks to Sandy no doubt. There was some severe drift too. There were peaks here and there, but it was tough to stay in any spot for long. I have heard that it hasn't really been good for years.... but every dog has his day. You can get cheap cigs on the nearby Native reservation, and probably more than that in the other shady neighborhoods. Just don't leave the top of the BMW down, and put your laptop in the trunk.
I haven't been in a few years but when I did it was a bunch of close outs aswell. The reports always show LB a little smaller because it's further west. Gilgo or Moses are both good spots that will usually be a notch bigger, although I think LB has a better shaped wave
