Dane's awkward Surfer Poll speech

Haha.. That's even more ridiculous that the last statement. You actually think most could make it to his level if they were homeschooled? Come on dude. I do not think you are stupid, but you have got to be joking!!! There's about 20 dudes that are on his level and 10 of them are not too close. That's in the WORLD. You think you get there by not going to school? Silly

Like him or not Dane rips. He was probably stoned and drunk, having stated he was at the bar getting heckled...Then im sure he was nervous as hes standing up there talking to some of his peers while others are probably guys he looked to as a grom himself. We all get star-struck at some point or another. Not to mention a lot of it was prob inside jokes with the people he did know.

I dont get the quicksilver joke...did they release a bunch of pros or something?

Me too! He did seem genuine. Its hard to get up in front of people. I just did a best man speech and it was scary.

 

I don't think Dane is as good a surfer as Kelly, John John, and some others at the top level of the game. I think he has some amazing free surf stuff but even as of late john john has had some of the sickest free surf stuff I've seen. I'm also dying to se mfmissing as I heard it was amazing. I think being able to constantly be at the top of the tour with all the various waves really shows to a surfers consistantcy, because let's face it they are all super talented that's never a question. People make runs all the time. But it's people like Kelly and Mick that are always in it always impressive. Although I'm not sold on Mick I don't like his style as much. But anyways always being in it leads me to believe they are better/more talented/just have something everyone else doesn't. Kelly really seems sold on john john as the future of surfing he says he's the best a lot more than I hear him talk about dane

 

I know one things for sure, his speech was light years better than George Clooney's smug storm speech or anything else we see these false demigods of hollywood say.

 

I thought it was excellent...he came off awkward, but that happens to those who may dislike public speaking. Funny and found it refreshing...that guy rips!

I wish I had 1/10 of that young fella's talent. If I did, I would walk around not giving a sh!t about how I looked or what others thought of me too. Wait, I already walk around not giving a sh!t about how I look or what other think. Now I've gone and confused myself again....

 

Looked to me like he had a really good buzz on. There's other footage of him, like in "First Chapter" , where he comes off like ordinary Joe. Just don't think he really gives 2 turds about awards or popularity contest but his sponsors want him there. Seems like he prefers that eccentric artist approach to whatever he does lately.

 

Kelly always says that Dane is the best. He's said it in a ton of interviews... He does say that JJF is the future of the tour... JJF says that Dane has the most talent as well. If you were to ask all the guys at the top of the game most would say Dane has the most talent.
Personally I don't think one is better than the other. They are both insane.

I really dont even think Parko or Mick hold a candle to Dane's raw talent, they are just better CONTEST surfers.

If you dont know the difference between raw talent and contest surfing, I suggest you look into it

some people are really good at their thing and when you make them perform on command (like a dog) it drains the passion

 

High as an astronaut boys. Psyched to see Dane is a fellow herb toker. The way he was talking and that god awkward laugh gives it away.

 

JJF is the future of the tour, absolutely. I think JJF has a lot of natural talent but he also trains his ass off. It seems that dane has just that natural ability with or without training. He doesnt really give a **** and still rips harder than almost anyone. Thats what makes dane who he is. I would love to see what Dane would do if he trained constantly, I dont think anyone could touch him. It would never happen but that's what makes him who he is.

I'm fascinated that anyone can bash Dane on his speaking skills when on-stage (especially someone whose anonymous internet persona suggests he's a soul surfer). The dude is truly an artist and sees things differently than a lot of people. Hence his approach to a wave and life in general. Privileged? A little, but that comes from having talent at a young age too.

Nobody drew the Tom Curren parallel? Watch some of his old interviews and see how similar they speak. I don't think his speech suggested that he was stoned either. But I'm not ruling that one out...

Most interesting part of this thread is the Eddie Rothman/ Sam George incident. Eddie is still running around the North Shore trying to kick people's asses like the Neanderthal that he is. For decades now. However, I would never say that anywhere but from the anonymous safety of the internet!
