In a couple of weeks I'm leavin on a cruise for purto rico, st. Thomas, and St. Maarten. But because of family, it looks like I'm probably only gonna get to surf in st. maarten. I just wanna know if there's anything worth checking out or even bothering to even think about in St. Maarten. I've looked at some of the tourist websites but from what I can tell they have no idea what they're talking about.
theres a surf shop bear where you get off the ship that you can stop by and they can point you in the right direction. i personally didnt get to go to check the waves because i was leaving when i finally found the surf shop. they also rent boards at too.
Yes, there is surf in the BVI, mostly along the northern coasts. You can use the Swellinfo Puerto Rico forecasts, and use the PR nearshore wave maps, and Caribbean wave maps for some guidance. You are mostly looking for N / NW swells. The North coast of Puerto Rico will also pick up the ENE trade swells.
i just read in transworld surf magazine that tortola in BVI gets some pretty good waves. mostly reef breaks though and its kinda inconsistent. the also have good parties too
St Maarten is not the same as BVIs. St Maarten is shielded by Anguilla to the North, so I would guess your best chance of getting waves would be on the east coast. That said, BVIs and USVIs offer some great surf. BVI's consistent spot is Apple Bay, which does receive swell from the North & is a reef break. Another spot is Cane Garden Bay, which requires a larger swell and is a right hand point break. Good luck!
You can surf and party in the exact same spot...Apple Bay. If you are there for a Full Moon it's on...Shroom tea... I caught it pretty decent there in 2 spots.
