I'm sure a lot of us on here snowboard too. Some of the coolest days of my life have been getting in an early morning surf then hitting the slopes for a little powder session in the evening. I live in North Carolina and by far the best resort here in the SE is Snowshoe. I've been as far west as Tahoe snowboarding but in the past few years we've really enjoyed our time up north in the New England area. I'm curious to everyone's favorite resorts/mountains up that way. My favorite by a mile so far has been Sugar Bush but have boarded quite a few resorts in Vermont and New Hampshire . This year we were thinking about hitting Sugarloaf or Sunday River. Any positive reviews or thoughts?
As an east coast snowboarder for 20yrs if I were you I wouldn't waste the time driving to Maine from NC or the money on a flight there. Just grab a flight to Utah or CO. Its probably the same price. I did park city powder cats the last two years in a row. Its worth every penny.
Good friend of mine (also a surfer snowboarder) loves Sunday River Maine. I went to Big Bear 3 yrs ago, but have SB on the EC besides that. Snowshoe, Buttercup - Western Mass, Mt Snow and Killington - VT.
maine and vt are super windy and cold. Yes there are bluebird powder days but that is like once a week, not most days like out west. You can fly from vb (well newport news) to Denver direct for around $400.
Sunday River is everything Killington is but less crowded. Sugarloaf is fun with the above-treeline thing but conditions aren't always 100% unless they have a good base. If you're in that area Saddleback is worth checking out too.
I agree flight out west is cheaper and the way to go for better conditions especially if you are driving from NC. I have a condo at Killington but I usually rent it to other people and go out west (Montana is my favorite) or I drive to jay peak. Jay is my favorite for east coast. Sugarloaf is good but most of the time all the snow blows off the snowfields Sunday river has the same problem. Killington holds snow a little better in the wind. The Beast is good on weekdays and non holidays but gets too crowded on weekends its the Jersey shore in the summer of Vermont. Not to knock my stompin ground but when its all bennied out in the water during summer I just like to chill and heckle the occasional benny and wait for hurricane swell and winter, when im going to a mountain I try to go when or where there is no one.
One of the reasons we've been boarding a lot up north is due family in the New York area, that's why the easy flight to Denver is out. I've been checking out Jay Peak too and maybe even Gore for convenience but I don't mind driving for good snowboarding. A lack of crowds and good conditions are BY FAR the most important factors to me.....that's why we always go during the week.
Gore is a good mountain and makes sense if you are in ny. There's Whiteface there too if you like steeps you will love Whiteface but it gets blown off a lot there. If you are gonna drive to Maine check out Wildcat mountain in NH on the way. Its been empty every time ive been there weekend or not.
I was looking for flights last month for the 1st of the year, (weed totally legal then) and found several flights under 300 bucks. and that's leaving Friday nite and returning the Sunday nite .
Is it true there's a reefer vending machine there? If they had one of those in Jersey someone would be driving down the road with that thing in the back of their iroc z.
There's a 25% tax on weed but the prices are ok. Fatties for 8 bucks for top shelf. then there's the edibles. Fly in for a weekend, grab some lozenges and a blunt and wander the airport looking at the murals. http://thechive.com/2012/03/08/something-is-rotten-in-the-denver-airport-25-photos/
Iwas looking at other items on the site for the mural pics and got here, http://thechive.com/2013/12/22/my-favorite-tapiture-photos-of-the-week-50-photos-51/ check out #34. geebus, she probably could break brass bolts with scrunch
Weed vending machines? That's brilliant!!! I may have to rethink my plans. I've been to Wildcat. Killer views and we got dumped on there....maybe a foot or a little more. Hit Bretton Woods while up that way too.
Snowboarding, not just for humans.
