I am wondering how many "normal surfers" travel to other parts of the world to go and surf. I live and Galveston, and the waves are not that good. I am wanting to adventure out and find some great swells. I am not the best, so Mavericks and pipe line are out of the question. Who has some suggestions based off of places you have been.

I actually think you should definitely try Pipeline or Mavericks before you waste your time elsewhere. Those are places that "normal surfers" tend to do really, really well at.

Man, the heck with Galveston, no disrespect to Glen Campbell & Jimmy Webb. Get on your shizzle & fajizzle towards big surf, and you should do that immediately, as in right away.

Paddle out, or in, but just go, man, go. You're a "normal surfer" and you will be accepted & ceded props in the lineups wherever you wander.

When you get to the 'Bu, you, of course, will shot the pier there. Riding nothing less than 23' peeling hindus. Naturally. Finish your sesh, and glide, don't walk, no way cool man cool, to your BMW drop top ride, with your smoke stack chica waiting to put a lip lock on your jank as you cruise the coastal highway.

You, mang, are wasting your time in Galveston. It's patently obvious.

Change the title of this thread to "How many of you actually surf?"

Galveston, don't you guys catch waves when some oil tanker moves its anchor? Mad rustic yo!

Teahupoo, Shipsterns, Dungeons... Anyone of those would be perfect for a 1st trip.. Once you get a couple of those under your belt head to Costa Rica or Puerto Rico... Then when your really dialed go to the Mecca aka BELMAR

I should say beginner surfers! Sorry, not everyone grows up where there are head high sets every day.

I hate to say it, but for you Central America is just stones throw away. You could probably fly out of Houston fairly cheaply to anywhere down there. Also Puerto Rico is pretty close too.

Yes they do tend to get really good waves but the nice thing about these places is you don't have to a high skill level of surfing to go there and have a good time. You could have a 12' reef break and just around the corner it could be 3' - 4' peelin beach break!

These areas are also multiple board friendly. You can take longboard, fun board, short board etc... and pick your break of choice according to your skill level.

Pipeline is reserved for locals and pros but if you are deadset on a Hawaain surf trip there are also a lot of other breaks in which you could get into. There's waves all over the islands some require a little more experience than others. Downside is that it can be very costly.

Dude make it easy on yourself - take a trip to Cali and go on an adventure or maybe consider Belmar NJ if you thinking of trying some bigger surf - waves up to 23 ft there!

Loving this thread. But listen to walking/yankee/nynj, maybe hit Pipe or Shippies to get used to the juice, then just head straight to Belmar, New Jersey.

In all seriousness I have yet to venture out of the NE for surf, but my goal this year is to get my coin situation right and my first trip will be Nica methinks.

Does it count if I surf while traveling for work? I'm not traveling FOR surfing, but surfing while I'm there. Can't beat the price. Aside from the board rental all expenses are company-paid.

The week after next I'll be SoCal. Specifically, the Oxnard and Modesto areas. Any recommendations for an intermediate? Breaks, surf shops to rent a board, etc? Probably going to avoid Santa Cruz...

Check out some surf camps. You're not a far flight from Swell surf camp in the Dominican Republic, or Witches Rock in Costa Rica, or even Zeds in Barbados. Great places to meet friends, get lessons or just do your own thing, and waves of all sizes, depending how much you're willing to push yourself. I've been to all three in the last year and highly recommend Swell, and think it's the most beginner friendly. The staff there is awesome and the break is nice; it's a big outside reef brake with mellow inside rollers. I got the most gnarly waves in Costa Rica, and Barbados had a lot of fun waves and I had an awesome time driving around and exploring the country. My wife and I made friends on all our trips and have taken more with our new friends. The easiest friends to get traveling are the ones you meet while traveling :)
