So who here thinks they've taken the cheapest possible surf trip to central america? I'm a broke student who is soon going to be a broke student with student loan debt, but summer job=nicaragua?? Remember, cheapest trip ever that had clean running water and was under a roof.
El Salvador would probably be your cheapest bet. If you go to Costa or Nicaragua they journey is quite a bit longer. If you go to ELS the airport is like 20 minutes from the beach and you're surfin! Places like Las Olas or Edgar's place at K-59 are all inclusive. The rates are really pretty cheap and it literally includes everything. Nicaragua is a great place to go but I would reserve it for a longer type trip (like 2 weeks or more) Stuff like food and such are cheap but hotel/places to stay aren't really that cheap. Best bet, like I said if you have a lot of time on your hands in Nica you should rent a house. Also when going to Nicaragua you really want to rent a car also. The beach is quite a long ways from the airport and thought the waves and different breaks are really good, they can be far apart. Many good breaks also require boat rental. Costa used to be cheap but now is just plain over-run. The days of dinner and a six pack of beer for $4 are long gone. So are the days when you could trade some Bob Marley CD's, handful of stickers and a couple leashes for a couple nights stay in a nice bungalow on the beach! Anyway, that's my two cents man!! I think you would be really impressed with El Salvador. By the way, I'm not talking about the Las Flores area. Las Flores is way south (about 4-6 hours from the airport) and though it is a very nice place with lots of wave options, it isn't cheap. Its actually a really killer place, but pricey. Stick to the La Libertad area. This is where K-59 is, Sunzal, and the famous Punta Roca! Punta Roca is the Pipeline of Latin America. I've got some of the best waves of my life there! Here's a little more info.... http://www.wavehunters.com/el-salvador-surfing/sunzal-surf (not affiliated with these people, just thought they had some good info)
I would say nica. Been there two times. Popoyo area is yout best bet. You can find places from 5bucks a night no AC, 30 bucks a day for all three meals and either walk to te closets breaks or take 5 dollar rides from your surf guide in the hotel. Check the nicawaves hotel, great trip in general
I'm about to go to Hawaii. Bought the tickets with airline miles and I'm going to stay at my buddies place on the windward side. He even has an extra car for us to use. Cheap cheap.
Bro- have you considered Belmar, NJ?? Its a fine town with the best waves around, and you don't even have to travel out of the states... you can pick up a seasonal job there working at the laundry mat or at a restaurant, and surf all the day long! #StayforcheapinBelmar #BelmarLife
I don't think I can quite handle the 23 footers in Belmar. And its definitely surf trip. My buddy wants to stay at Mal Pais surf camp south of Santa Teresa, were we can get a room for 4 for 50 a night, but I wan't to check out Popoyo in nic.
