My 6/5 is too warm i get hot when the air isn't freezing. Tomorrow is going to be warm and Im thinking about wearing my 4/3 with 1mm vest attached to hood underneath for my core. I also throw on some underarmor pants for extra mm or so. When the water was 44 and air was in the 20's I was alright for about 3 hours. Anyone else wearing a 4/3 tomorrow or should I just stick to the 6/5? I have a good tolerance to the cold and Im technically wearing a 5/3 with the under armor.
I am still wearing my 4/3... was out the last swell a few days ago in my O'Neill mutant 4/3. Granted the hood is actually attached to the suit, I was plenty warm and plan on doing the same tomorrow am.
4/3 good as long as u have a hood, but I still see people with no hood.tomorrows warm and surf looks good, wind should stay offshore all day, looks like a good day tomorrow
I'd be rocking the 4/3 if it were a Drylock with no rips or leaks. The 5/4 will do for now but most days that thing is hot and heavy like a wahine convention.
Why not just paddle out at Belmar,NJ? It's going to be better there tomorrow anyways... #alwaysbetterinbelmar
Surfed about 2 weeks ago and my buddy was wearing a 3:2.He has a 4:3 but still deceided not to wear it.He said he was Fine.
I think you'll be fine if u have a hood and wear warm boots and gloves. I get hot in my 5/4 too but my friends r freezing even though they have 6mm suits.
I wear my O'Neil mutant 4-3'with zip attached hood most of the year. I love it. But it has been below freezing last few good days in NJ recently. So I got a 5.5/4.5 rip curl ebomb just before Xmas and it helps a lot. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be 36 air temp and what, 42 water so il definitely use ebomb in the morning. But with those 4 degree and 22 degree days lately, glad I got the thicker wettie. But I whisper sweet nothings to my mutant regularly.
I was watching Morning of the Earth just now, and I can't help but think those guys would've probably been posting similar speculations about various air/water/wetsuit scenarios back in 1971 had the internet been available. They would've stopped playing around with all those vegetable farms and chickens and coconuts and simply had some round cyber-table discussions about what they'd wear in the water the next day with people living hundreds of miles away in an "All Discussions" designated thread. When I buy a wetsuit, I usually put it on, walk downtown, and ask people if they think I'd be cold if I got in the water. When they answer, I usually look for other people, both to get further feedback, and to see if they think I'd be cold in other states and or countries. I usually get a pretty good sense of the right suit after this exercise. It takes time, but it's worth it. It's really no different than figuring out what you need to wear to stay warm on land in the winter. You know, you're checking out at the grocery store, and after shopping around for 20 minutes or so, you're not really sure what it's going to feel like out there. Like any sensible person, you ask the cashier, "Do you think I'll be cold if I walk my groceries to the car without zipping up my jacket?" And if you're really not sure, maybe you check in with the person behind you in line, too. It usually works, but you never know. Life can be like that. Anyway, I forgot my password, and I've gotta say, retrieving it with that anti-spam "enter the code" thing on Swellinfo was nearly impossible, because it was the longest damn code and more distorted than I've seen on any other website. How the hell did the Banner Spam Guy break through that line of defense!? I have even more respect for Banners now than I did when I first encountered the poetry of his Spam.
use the 6/5 a giant ice cube (back bay) just melted…water will be cold…better safe than hypo-thermic….remember if you find yourself 'snapping out' of a semi- trance-like state…such as revisiting reality after a day-dream..you could be dancing w/hypo- thermia. get out.
I go with a good 4/3 all winter. When sun is out, and wind mild, I do not have any problems. The 5/4 was too bulky and heavy. Do not mind being a little cool, but do not like being hot.
I wear a Drylock 4/3 all winter in Rockaway Beach NY with Drylock 7mm mitts, Quiksilver 7mm booties (the Achilles heal of my gear), and a wool (?) lined hood. Hands and feet get cold on the coldest of days, but never had an issue with my core. Surfers 20 years ago dealt with much less warmth, much more flushing, a whole lot more bulk and some really embarrassing colors.
What he said haha Seriously emass and h2o are right as well. Rocked a 4/3 no hood in vb. I had an Effin blast despite the rip. pain is weakness leaving the body ol sport. You will soon be strong if you trunk it. Less weight and in your mind it'll be summertime.
just got out...i rocked my new 8/7 made of 100% seal skin...completely comfortable, although not much flex...would have stayed out longer, but started seeing too many men in grey suits.
Water is 38-41 F in NJ I've never heard of anybody being "too hot," in the winter. Only on this site.....only on this site....... Another quality day in New Jersey. Thank God for the winds or I reckon people might have succumbed to heat stroke out there today. This site is a trip. I see things and hear things that I have never would have even dreamed of seeing/hearing. God bless the internet. Greatest invention of mankind.
With your double comments about god I would have thought you would have been more disciplined with your statement( I've never heard of anybody being to hot in the winter). You forgot about the fire surfers of hell! BTW I could care less who believes and who doesn't. I do however enjoy your sarcasm !
