going to go. The most annoying thing is when a person will start paddling hard to get a set and then last second before the drop pull back thus ****ing it up for everyone and sometimes you have to wait for these sets. I dont understand why someone wont say "hey go its your wave" I always do this if I am paddling and realize i am too deep I scream for the other person to go. somemany people do this and it costs everyone a lot of waves. I am not saying I am kelly slater by any means but if I go I go even if I eat ****. I dont care if you eat **** at least go since your are already commited or tell the other person to go. Dont know why this is not common etiquette especially in these crowded days.

Agreed...hate to say it, and if I see someone do that more than once (especially if they're waves I was in position for and passed on thinking they were going) I just assume they'll miss everything thereafter.

Because people are the worst. Sometimes you surf with really cool strangers and you are on the same level, and sometimes you are next to a dude who was sponsored before high school and now he's super bitter, slamming the water, cursing up a storm, and doesn't smile the hour he's out because he can't get over the wave he just blew. Flip a coin, and hopefully it doesn't land on complete Richard. If you are lucky you end up having a blast sharing waves with random strangers.

THIS usually never happens in Belmar, NJ...

but I do know what your talking about- I find that it happens more so in the warmer water with the Summer Pros (oh how I miss those summer pros...). Sometimes you get the guy that has to sit right next to you- and every wave that you paddle for- he automatically starts going for it too, just because he has priority- without even looking! So I usually paddle for a smaller close out and let him have it - or I drop in on him on a good wave so he gets the message...

that's why I like Belmar, NJ so much- everyone there is super cool

If I am surfing alone (which I wuz yesterday) and I go for a wave and I eat it but no one is around to see it, do I still make a sound?
if I am surfing with one other person and I go but then don't go then that guy hoes but then doesn't go and then we both go and then not go, what happens then?
If there is a god and he is omnipotent, can he create a wave he cannot surf?

right you are - don't' let 'em get away with it….

if its my priority and I'm' trying but don't catch it and i know others are in line…i always
either tell them or shake my head no (which most seem to understand)…I'M THE ONLY GUY
WHO DOES THIS….WHY? Don't know; i assume its the accumulated baggage of experience
    combined w/manners combined w/dontdomelikedat…..been there,done that,lived the
consequences which i find boring and little to do w/actual surfing.

when (usually its intermediates) i encounter a foul along these lines i toss an imaginary
penalty flag at the offender and tell them what they did. half the time its being clueless, the
    other half vindictive.

If I think Iam going to be to deep, i will tell the other guy to go...wish others would do this...I have dropped on a few that I knew were way to deep and never had a problem with the other rider.

you know its not as black and white as you say.... sometimes a late drop can be made and sometimes it can't and one doesnt know till its the last moment. but yeah its better business if one plays it more friendly like and opts to not risk the late takeoff when in the crowd and others are in better spots down the line.

Haha this can be such a pet peeve. Honestly, I don't hoot for waves but when I do I'm sittin too deep but want the wave. I typically hate everyone so my attention getting mechanism is to make "you" pay attention and not let the wave go to waste. Isn't that right 757surfer?

P.s. - 757 has good manners. Y'all should be more like him

Let me get this straight-the complaint is you are upset about missing waves while sitting insiidre or further from the peak than another guy who misses waves? Seems like the solution is for the better surfer to be in the better position to get the waves.

I think the complaint is someone sitting inside of you and paddling then backing off and yelling for you to go. Sometimes it's too late then for you to go and the entire wave gets blown.
I've seen people do this before. I usually give them 1 or 2 chances. If they do it again, I'll either paddle around them to be inside of them or drop in on them on the 3rd attempt. They shouldn't be sitting inside if they aren't going to commit and are blowing waves for everyone.
In some places you can get slapped just for paddling for the same wave that the guy on the inside is going for. Whether you know it or not you paddling for the wave can feather the face and mess it up.

This is interesting because it happens so fast. In big surf it happens really really fast. If there is lots of waves it is no biggie, but if it during a crowded day with long lulls it can be frustrating. There are no easy answers, especially if it is big. If it is not big, then you have time to go once the other guy bails and if you eat it it is no major problem. If it is big, than you can get hurt, or at least have to paddle out through heavy water to get lined up again.

This happened to me once in fairly big waves ( 10 -12 foot faces ) and I am not proud, but I tell it as a cautionary tale:

I was out with a couple of friends in a spot I only surfed a couple of times on good north swells. It was firing, and lined up with a good drift and offshores. Only a few guys were out, and there was enough waves for everyone. Three to four waves per set, only a short lull between sets made paddling out hard.

One of my buddies ( who is now a great friend who I have traveled with in large surf ) kept pulling out on waves I knew I could get. He was always in better position, and was on a longboard - I was on a shortboard - and I got frustrated and after the third time it happened I made up my mind to go on the next wave no matter what. A set came, about double overhead, and he was way back behind the peak and I saw him start to paddle. I was way in front of the peak and went. Out of nowhere he comes flying around the first section and nails me and dings his board. He had to leave, go home and get another board. I felt so f*ing bad, and payed for the ding repair and he got to meet my shaper who is real cool so it turned out OK, but that's what happens when you assume.

hey when im going,im going no matter what.if theres a guy paddling for the same wave,im still going.if im close enough and they back off,il push them into the wave.some people go out of turn so u have to deal with it accordingly,so if im waiting, and someone just went, then trys taking my wave, its time for the paddle battle.but in honesty,i actually never dropped in on anyone.theres usually not enough people in the water to drop in on somebody.yesterday wasn't that good, wasnt that bad either but still a great day.i usually pull up to a spot and its either empty or theres a few guys.il sit watch the waves for 15 minutes, and if I don't see anyone take a wave,or its all closeouts,i move on.but if theres a few people out,and the waves are perfect and theyr letting these bombs slide thrugh,il paddle out because I know I could get some good waves since nobody else is going.idk,I guess some people feel safer surfing in a crowd, but its actually more dangerous.3-4 people, yea that's cool, but 30 people when theres great breaks on both sides of the crowds, thats just borderline retarded.im about to start designating my own jettys since everyone wants to surf the jetty 3 jettys down,im going to call it "mine" lol.like "ours" by the bra boys.all are welcome, bring your foamies, floaties, and boaties.come on down to #b'mar

yes first world problems indeed. for me its about maximizing wave count when there are people out. i would rather you go and eat **** then paddle and not go. best thing you can do is have that conversation with people in the lineup(I think in nice terms) which I do but I think some people dont get it. they just apologize which is not my point. if your not going to go point to me and tell me to go because if I have to make a last minute decision and turn and go with no notice its always harder to make it. communication is key in other words. but yes someone said this is surfing with people who you dont know and thats what happens on weekends so there was a lot of truth to whoever said that. m-f its difference. anyways lets all feel happy for the great waves weve been having. more on the way.

Stinkbug, I don't think littlerhody is cocerned about someone further from the peak than she is. If that's the case she should stand up and ride. If its somwone further to the peak missing waves paddle aound them.

Annoying, yes... but on a day like yesterday, I'm surfing 'till I'm shot anyway, so in the end it's not a big problem if a handful of waves go by unridden. I'll have all I want by the end of the day anyway...

If the guy keeps missing waves whats the complaint?? Spin and go for it. If you cant make a wave without him telling you to go then id say the prob isnt just with him....
