Looking for a new set of fins for my new flyer, and not sure really what is the best fit for me. I've been surfing for little over 10 years now but never really tried different fins. Looking for something with a lot of drive but loose off the top. Normally like to surf down south in the OBX but live in Virginia Beach. I am a medium size build 5'9 165 lbs. Any info on these two fins would be awesome.
AM2 is my all time fav fin, and the 5 fin set works good if your board is setup for it. jordy is a little big for only 165
is the flyer your all around board? what size surf will you be riding it in? not familiar with the jordy's but the AM2's are one of the larger fins out there and to me a larger fin especially at your size is not gonna be "loose off the top". i think it will depend what kind of surf you will be riding that board in. there are some other guys on here who are pretty fin saavy, like njsurfer42.. but id suggest giving us a little more info
I have such and such fins on the bottom of my board, they work great when there are waves. They have a lot of drive off the bottom except when I feel like they don't because the waves are mushy. Seriously - check out the fcs website they have a thing on there where you can adjust different things and it picks out a fin for you
the most telling aspect of the jordy fin, IMO, is that jordy rides the AM2 when the chips are down... side by side, the 2 templates are very similar...wide base, lots of rake, narrow tip. the AM2 features a smaller center fin while the jordy has 3 same sized fins & significantly longer base (a difference that's magnified on the center fin). i kinda think both fins are a touch large for you. the AM1 or the medium jordy set would be a better choice, i think. True Ames version of the AM2 is my go-to futures fin & i've got about 30lbs on you.
Yea the Flyer is my all around board, mostly surf mushy beach breaks at home but will get some solid double overhead surf in the OBX during the winter time. This winter I am going to Puerto Rico too so I wanna take that in to consideration as well. It sounds like the Jordy's might be for me besides the AM1.
Curious what you ended up getting and how they went on the NF. I've done AM's forever on TPH Merricks, but it seems like the AM2 seems to be taking over with the newer shorter boards and I just got a NF.
In general terms, for what you're after, look for a more upright fin with a relatively longer base and small tip area. The base gives you drive, the smaller tip keeps it loose, and the vertical template has a more pivoty feel. More rake, and more tip area draw out your turns.
WCT Fins. Won't add speed to the board, but tons of drive. very performance driven as well. If you are looking for something that will help produce speed, whether its cause you are in crappy surf or you are looking for help, go with the Blackstix AM1. The AM2 are way too big of a fin for you.
Do you have a local fin test center? My local shop carries about 10 futures models and 8 FCS models. Thats in OCMD. finattic may be good idea. 9.99 a month and you can try whatever you want. one set of fins would almost cover a years worth of subscription.
You guys seem to be going off the assumption he has futures boxes. The AM3 would be the smallest for FCS. He's have to be a midget for this to be true. The AM2 is smaller than the AM, which was on every CI board for years. It's also got less area than both of the K fins.
