Has anyone surfed completely alone in the winter on the eastern shores? And by alone I mean no one in the water and no one in the houses overlooking the beach, assuming there even are houses. I have some people that say its a great experience and others that swear they will never do it. share your thoughts.... I'm curious what an experienced surfers point of view is
I'm sure everybody that actually surfs here has surfed alone; winter, summer, dawn, dusk. Most prefer it.
It happens for me every now and then. Makes me think I'm more motivated than everybody else or maybe just dumb because if nobody is out waves are probably not great but either way I am getting to surf. It's also always nice not having to share waves.
Well the family could see me from the deck, but not like they could be any help if I got into trouble. I prefer to have at least someone w\in sight, but if there are waves, you just go...I am a bit more wary though.
I surf alone plenty in the Winter. I actually prefer to have a few friends with me, just because I think it's more fun.
I usually go to the beach "alone" but only go in if others are in the water too. I have been out there alone before but it was only waist high so my thoughts were that something really bad would have to happen for something to go wrong. Side bar - Do people take notice when others are in the water?? I tell my girlfriend that even though i didnt go with anyone that fellow surfers usually keep an eye on each other is this true or do people just get tunnel vision and only focus on themselves???
All the time. Today I was completely alone. No houses, no one on the beach. Actually the majority of my shuts this winter have been completely alone. I used to not go out if no one else was around when I was young but now I do it all the time. Usually in winter but even in the summer I'll get to the beach before sunrise and paddle out in the dark if the moon is bright enough. It's nice to get a few waves to myself even if it's only for 30 min before every one else shows up. Iv never surfed anything bigger then chest/head high alone though. I feel like once it's over head if be more cautious, but I think I'd paddle out if it was really good.
At my home break all the time but when I was in Costa I have to admit I did get really sketched out surfing alone.
Yes quite a bit. Especially when I surf in eastern Maine. Not many surfers up here. Just a cove surrounded by trees and mountains. No people and definitely no houses. I love it, but I'll be honest sometimes it does get a little creepy. I also try to avoid going out alone when its big.
I did once and the boogie man was out there. He said if anymore surfers surf alone he will be mean to them. Don't do it! The boogiemaan will get you. Ps. The Loch Ness monster was out there plus the Jersey Devil and Sasquatch.
This guy was at a local break about a year ago. A big fish like a tarpon leaped out of the water, hit him in the head unconscious. Lucky the lineup was semi crowded and a guy spotted it happen and saved the guys life. True and really weird story. And then there is this story: http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...2RWAAAAIBAJ&sjid=ZfIDAAAAIBAJ&pg=1995,4115987 Doesn't mean you can't surf alone, of course, just interesting.
I hate when that happens! A big tarpon smashed underneath my board as I was laying flat on it, and I bounced up in the air off my board about a foot high and landed back on it. I was all alone and had my feet up because I saw big swirls and didn't know if it was sharks or what. It was chest high and clean, and in a spot known for sharks. I got out after I almost ruined my boardshorts. I saw from the beach it was a big tarpon, but left anyway I was so sketched out. This almost never happens at Typhoon Lagoon.
I'm always first in the water at sunrise, only one around for at least the first hour or so until someone else paddles out at least. Occasionally i'll get an entire 3-4hr session all by myself, but at some point someone walks by or something. But I don't really pay attention to what's going on other than catching my next wave so even if there was anybody there, i wouldn't see them. I do my best surfing when i'm alone, nobody to distract me, just me and the ocean and the occasional visitor in the water or air. Of course, being in the water that early (sometimes before sunrise) isn't exactly the safest idea, but it has it's advantages.
In CR I'd be alone 75% of the time. I'd be out at sunrise, before all the drunkards and "sniffers" It's pretty dang scarey. That ocean is alive.
No data to back this up, but something tells me getting in your car at 10 pm is more dangerous. I surf alone almost always. In winter, 95% of time.
