Probably not the best time of year, south winds usually start here in the spring and is less than ideal direction for Santa Cruz, but the kelp beds cuts down on the chop, and if you catch it early in the mornings there's still a good chance for clean conditions. On the plus side spring is a beautiful time of year to visit cali and you can always drive to monterey to get out of the south winds. Coming from the east coast myself, there is almost always waves in nor cal. And with a little effort it's usually not hard to score good surf.

If a butterfly flaps it's wings over the Pacific, Santa Cruz gets waves.
