Here's the latest...looks like service will begin soon - take a night to stop in Portland on your way...you never know who you can run into here...bumped into Tony Hawk on a Sunday night in an empty Bull Feeney's - also Novare Res is a first rate beer establishment with a great setting http://www.pressherald.com/news/Nov...ortland_meet_U_S__financial_requirements.html
Interesting...going to block island in September for a week...preying for surf. Nova Scotia may be on tap for the fall of 2015 with this ferry. Love surfing the New England area. Point breaks, rocky coastlines, and IMO, when firing, there is no better place on the east coast for surfing. When younger, Use to head in that direction every fall...surfed Maine, NH, Mass, and Rhode Island. Nova Scotia needs to be checked off.
When firing. That's like saying I'm a great guy any day I'm not being myself. I'm so down for NS as soon as this dinghy fires up. You ever charged Vermont bro? Champlain goes off on the reg with the ill wind swell. AggroNE smacks the lip on the sweet Caroline cutback.
If I recall, the ferry is a bit pricey. Rates come down in the fall, but I think it's still $80-$100 per person. Better and cheaper than driving, I suppose. The upside is the prospect of hanging with my boys, Ricky, Julian and Bubbles over in Halifax. I'll kick Cyrus square in the d!(k if I see him.
Did Lake Ontario from Selkirk this past Nov when I was home visiting...lake waves are tough to navigate, but caught a few nice rides! At the east end of the lake & northeast end waves can get B I G at the right spots (just not as organized as what I've seen on Superior).
I know a lot of local businesses are really hoping for the ferry thing to get sorted. Fall is the best time, however anything decent with an E component and good period gets the points and reefs going. Spring can be great too, NO BUGS and it's mellow before school let's out..Actually, it's always mellow except up around the city at popular spots it can get a little testy. There is so many spots just off the beaten track it's insane. Get a Nova Scotia Atlas and just work your way up from Yarmouth.
Truth is, when I lived in Burlington, VT, I DID surf on Lake Champlain. Gets rideable on strong NW-gales in and around Burlington. Waist-high novelty surf. But still surf.
Lake O works on the other end too. A few weeks ago we had head to overhead (no B.S.) with offshore winds. yes, it was -15 but surprisingly not much ice at all..
The ship arrived in NS yesterday! Service to begin on May 15th. I'm definitely getting on this. http://novastarcruises.com/nova-star-tracker/
$80 per person in best surfing seasons + a $5 pp fee + $139 to bring your car. For two people you've eclipsed $300 just for the ferry. Ouch...wish it was a bit cheaper.
It's a lap of luxury though brah. Not sure how much you fly, but you can't even move around a plane, there's one hopper for err buddy, and God help you if a fatty sits next to you. Them and all their snacks... This thing's got a dope restaurant, mini-casino, lounges, the works. These cabins are bomb too. It's a 9-hour ride so it's not gonna be cheap. That's actually a superb price comparative to other ferries of much lower travel time and far less plush amenities. I'm sold on this. You ever got shacked with a wahine in international waters? May as well do it in some style.
Alright, alright. So it's more like a mini vacation than a ferry ride. I can dig it. Gotta splurge for a berth though...some shut-eye will be necessary before shredding the New Scoash gnar. It is, after all, an overnight ride between Portland and Yarmouth. And yes, I shared a bunk with the most gorgeous wahine of all time, my wife. The ferry ride from Alcudia, Mallorca to Barcelona was unimaginable. Sun set over the Mediterranean...
