I'm middle-aged, and I've been doing this surfing sh** way too long in NJ. Shortboard, longboard, single-fins, mini-simmons, whatever the waves are calling for is what I ride. I guess I stay in this God-Foresaken pressure cooker of a state because of my family and my job. There are very few places in the country that have perfect chest to head high waves where only 3 guys are out, and one of those places is NJ. I bash this state all the time, but, try getting 15 good waves in one session almost anywhere in Southern California or Florida when it's lined-up and offshore. It's probably not happening. But, it can happen in the middle of the Winter in NJ. If you're a surfer, and you're not surfing in the doldrums of dark winter, then you're missing out. Plus, I do not consider you a surfer.

You make some very good points, except in FL you CAN find a nice chest - head walled up wave with hardly anybody on it, sometimes even go solo, just gotta know the spots off the beaten path (just stay away from the popular named spots) and get there before everybody else.

OK, I retract my Florida statement. Florida is huge, there are lots of nooks where you can find a wave. I've gotten quality Spanish House all to myself before, and that's a named spot...Just spread-out.

Had a very similar experience in Northern Mo Co on Saturday. 5 people out- kinda funky break. With the South to North drift acting like a conveyor belt, no one was on top of each other. Three photogs on the beach which I thought was funny. Caught like 5 waves over an hour and a half. The last one will keep me coming back though, made a it out of a nice barrel for the first time in a while.

um California is the 3rd biggest state in the country. Theres plenty of spots you can go get quality waves with nobody on it, throughout the state. Just gotta be willing to put the work in, and know where to look. They may not be all mag quality but like anywhere, it'll have its day.

I'm sure its the same everywhere tho. Waves are out there going off unridden, probably within 15 miles of whatever crowded break you went to. Just gotta break out of the pack and venture off from the norms.

Total bull****. There's PLENTY of places in California where you can ride basically alone. Do you know how big california is? Are you kidding me with this nonsense? 15 waves in one session?! LOL! Is this a joke bro?
You're just trying to justify the ec.
NJ has some of the most crowded lineups in the country. It's ultra crowded population combined with lack of breaks relative to length of shore, and lack of swells means everyone drops everything when a solid swell comes in. That being said, florida is almost never offshore. lol
Lets stop this silly debate of ec vs wc. It's absurd. We live here, that's why we ride here. Case closed and pray for waves

after reading your posts, I'm not sure I follow you. Are you over NJ because of the marginal surf or that the state just plain sucks? I would think that family and job would be the two biggest reasons to leave, but I'm curious where would you go?

San Diego County on a good day? Spots that you can park next to and not hike 1/2 hr to get to? They're all gonna be crowded, ALL OF THEM. That's what I was referring to. I'm not talking about bumble-F remote places. Yes, I am aware of the size of California, it's pretty darned big.
In NJ, you can park 100 yds from a break on a freezing winter day and surf good waves practically to yourself. That doesn't happen in Southern California anyplace where there's easy access unless it's a junk wave.

And yeah...15 waves in one session. A joke? No. If you have an hour and a half, and the waves are basically a conveyor belt, and there is one other guy out that can actually surf, why not?

i heard if you just tickle pat schmidt's butthole and give one of the Duerr Brothers a handj(o)b you can get all the waves you want out there.

True that, most of the time it's my buddies that I'm burning though :). But yeah, if you just got one and you come back out and try to back paddle me, we're sharing that wave like it or not.

The only time I would do this would be if he paddled back out in front of me. If he paddled around the back then kudos to him for being in better shape.
