i'm going into peru around the middle of april. flying into lima and basically winging the next two weeks from there. i've been doing my research but as we all know most websites boasting there location isn't going to get me the information i want. i'm just hoping for a few tips/insider information. i'm only traveling with one other person and probably no cameras. looking for the best ways to get around on a budget to get to north peru and hit these AMAZING pictures of left points i've been seeing. i'm not asking anyone to divulge any information giving away their secrets but may a few arrows pointing in the right direction would be fantastic! no matter how ya take this, thanks!
I am planning on visiting Peru this time next year, also flying into Lima and looking to drive north... Please post about your experiences!!!!!!!!
i stayed in barranca a couple times. good place. Mr Trailerpark is correct in those places he mentions. Keep in mind you will be traveling through some pretty knarly ghettos. keep it low keyed. Food is awesome and cheap, so is beer. Ganja great too!
Also, re: Peruvian snow 4sure when in rome do as the romans but DO NOT TRY TO BRING ANY BACK….why? two reasons - they will CATCH YOU at the airport on the way out and the other is the last place in the world you want to spend time is a peruvian prison….this bears repeating… DO NOT GO TO JAIL THERE!
Peru us cool. If there is a late season North swell you better get your arse up to the far North as some of those lefts are pipelinitos. Chicama is cool but only if a seriously big south swell is going. You're better off in the next break North if it is not that big.
puermape the reason its ok to out the next break north is cause its a ghost town…really…i dined naked in the town square…really.
Went there a few times over the years- great times! I'm stoked for you! There is some basic surf in Lima. There are some fun and empty points just south of Lima- we basically drove and looked and drove and looked. There was one that was fun- loco punts or something I don't remember If you travel north you will have one great adventure in the desert and sooo much fun! Head to chicama (sp??) longest left in the world I think- but it needs a huge swell to break- like it's gotta be 15 ft or something in Lima to be good up there. It's been along time I don't remember. It's two days of travel- 10 hrs- don't drive after dark. Seriously. Be careful at the check point the - the police will try to get you and bribe you- bring something like a MP3 player to give them. They will pull you over and say they just got a report that a car was stolen like the one your in... We had a freind of a freind drive us up there- a local Peruvian and they still gave us trouble. We paid him and paid for him for the trip- that was the best set up. It was a friend of a guy we knew that worked at the Mariot in Lima- jurco (your-co) was his name. Be careful what you eat and drink. Bottled water. Walk all the way around the point to paddle out- it's like a mike walk cause it breaks that far. Plenty of places to stay in chicama I'm stoked for you!
short story there is - and its short - standing on line at ticket counter i watched 4 Finns (as in finland) get popped with scads in a false luggage lining. thats it; don't know what happened to them but i'll never forget their ashen faces….as for me; i inhaled but never carried….
Huanchaco is a cool town to wait for a big chicama swell. That's where the guys in the famous reed boats surf the waves. Always some kinda surf there and cheap nice accommodation and food
im also headed out there. pretty pumped. going for 2 weeks first week to cusco to hike macho piccu then will find my way back to lima and try finding some surf and stay at a hostel
really living when back in lima stay in punta hermosa at oscars or sandros or pepe romos' house/hotel. why there? thats where the surf is……as far as bribing cops a carton of marlboros or a box of cigars or offer to gas their vehicle…kinda makes sense when one stops to think about what kind of salary they make… cusco? yeah man! inca trail? sure……macchu? quite spiritual even if you're not….all in all an exciting and exotic destination….
