when i was surfing until dark, I saw the craziest thing. there were blue lights coming up on the water. It looked like blue florescent lights appearing on the white water, when the waves broke. I saw a boat passing by also and there was a trail of blue florescent light behind it. It looked like light bulbs coming from under water. It was pretty freaky...I'm still trying to figure out what it was. My theories are either some type of glowing fish, or maybe there was nuclear waste dumped off the coast of northern monmouth county.... I swear I wasn't high when i saw it
its some kinda bacteria or plankton, cant remember the name. i havent seen it in a really long time but i remember once when i was a kid my friend was running at assateague and he tripped and the sand glowed green for an instant, it was pretty cool
they're called dinoflagellates. theyre a kind of protist... they glow blue or red <bio major lol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinoflagellate
I've never seen this before, but this phenomenon is called BioLuminescence. Do a google search on the word. But here is the wikipedia definition: Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism as the result of a chemical reaction during which chemical energy is converted to light energy. Its name is a hybrid word, originating from the Greek bios for "living" and the Latin lumen "light". Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is involved in most instances. The chemical reaction can occur either inside or outside the cell. In bacteria, the expression of genes related to bioluminescence is controlled by an operon called the Lux operon. Bioluminescence has appeared independently several times (up to 30 or more) during evolution[1]. Bioluminescence occurs in marine vertebrates and invertebrates, as well as microorganisms and terrestrial animals. Symbiotic organisms carried within larger organisms are also known to bioluminesce.
yeah i saw the same thing at like 930 last night it was insane...thought there was something wrong with me when i saw it
I would love to incorporate some of these dinoflagellates into my diet, how great would it be to have glowing pee and spit. I may go down to the beach and drink a few gallons just to see if it works.
Surfed in it a couple of weeks ago,Check out the thread Red water(Plankton).After what I read I probably wouldn't surf in it again but it was pretty cool for the moment.
