headed down to Avon, NC spring break 12th-19th. Normally go to Nags head but will be staying more south. Wondering the possibility of swell, what suit to bring (if any), where to surf. Will be hitting up buxton lighthouse, and possibly avon pier, any suggestions?
Plenty of different bars all over the OBX as you know. As far as suits go, yes you will need a wetsuit and probably still a 4/3 at that point. The highs are only mid 50s all next week....why aren't you going to florida where it will be boardies at that point? Have fun!
The pier and the lighthouse are both great spots. I would definitely have a 4/3 and booties on-hand for that period of the month. The water is going to be warmer than up in Nags Head, but I still think it's going to be in the mid 50's, and that's booties for me at least.
You might get lucky and be able to take off the gloves (doubtful), but you need to bring at least a 4/3, boots and gloves.
Avon can experience some serious temp changes in the water just like Buxton, so be ready to be surfing in temps ranging from the high 40's to the mid to upper 50's this time of year. Plenty of great banks all over Avon.
Enjoy! OBX may be my favorite place ever and I wished I could go with. So close yet so far away. Party on mi amigo. Damn work.....
also if one is unaware of why surfers think so much of the obx; go find out. put another way there is a reason why so many of us love it. put still another way its not ones' average east coast beachbreak....
Meh I've been to the outer banks on spring break and it was chest high and fun one out of 6 days and the water was frezzing arse. May not be the prevailing opinion on here but I'd rather surf a chest high wave in boardies in Smyrna than a 1 ft over head wave in Avon in a 4/3 boots gloves and a hood..in fact I'd rather surf a thigh high wave in boardies then a stomach high wave in all that rubber.....especially at this point of the year. Also, I like chilling in the sun, drinking beer, and girls in bikinis....but that's just me. Have fun in the banks
can't disagree with any of that. did you know that the obx were birthed by a small notch in the bottom of a glacier as it retreated northward??
baddy where'd you find that tidbit of info about the glacial birth notch? neat stuff! Also, I love obx for spring break. its different than Florida, if you want to get drunk in the sun and maybe surf, FL, if you want to seriously surf and drink seriously with gruff fishermen, OBX
stay at Frisco Woods Campground, if it's still there, and tell the owners I said hi. also tell them I'm sorry I almost set their whole campground on fire hacky sacking with a burning hacky sack that got stuck in a tree and set it ablaze. whoops. good times. i like Hatteras.
thanks - pretty sure i picked up that tidbit at the space museum/wallops island (you know, on the entrance to chincoteague). the info stuck w/me cause i was always curious how the islands of the outer banks could stand and face the fierce north atlantic when the rest of those on the east coast kind-of shied away from it..
Here's one for you fellers(just in case you're unaware)...the Chesapeake Bay was formed by a large meteor strike(I think one of the largest we're aware of). Lot's of interesting glacial features in the NE though...morraines, glacial erratics, all kinds of groovy sh!t.
Just remember, the Piggies are always looking for revenue. they frequently have "inspection stations" coming in on both bridges. Sometimes NC stateboys are at the line in Moyok with dogs.
Can confirm about the Moyock Pigpen^ I surfed nags head / kdh first of march over spring break and it got chilly rather quick in my 1yr old 4/3. Obviously its gonna be a bit warmer, but I would plan on rather cold water. better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Don't forget Frisco - works better on south swell when the winds out of the north/ne/nw. Wind bounces back and forth this time of the year between north and south so expect anything. Unfortunately the onshore wind on the Banks can pose a problem but that usually means at least some rideable wind swell at the Lighthouse. Usually fast moving lows with strong south winds then wind switching northwest. Used to camp every year over Easter break. Caught some good nuggets about every year during that time. Water temps pretty cold still but if we can put together a couple of weeks of 70+ weather than it should help warm it up a tad. NC surf cameras: www.surfchex.com or www.wblivesurf.com
