how thick of booties/gloves do i need to make it through the winter? also, anyone have any strong opinion towards gloves/lobster claws/mittens? lastly, I see a bodyglove fusion 5/4/3 hooded online for $220. is this a worthy suit at a good price? if not, how much will i be spending at a surf shop for one? p.s. anyone think saturday will be worth going out? friends wanna go but looks a bit turbulent, i'm thinking sunday will be better.
Minimum of 5mm. I like 7mm for boots. My preference is lob claws but mainly for grip. Mittens keep your hands warmer tho. That looks like a good price on the suit. is it used?
I'd say you are going to want 5mm boots/gloves. Some people even go with 7mm boots, but I haven't even tried that yet. Lobster Claws vs. 5 finger gloves - I've worn both. I've had more problems with getting holes in the 5 finger gloves, but my current winter gloves are bodyglove 5 fingers, and they have been good to me. A lot has to do with personal preference. Some say the claws are warmer...? As far as buying a suit online... I'd say you are better off going to a shop and trying on suits. The most important part of buying a wet suit is making sure it fits you good. If it is too loose or too tight then it sux. For New Jersey, this weekend, it looks like sunday is the call. Saturday is looking sideshore and choppy.
For years I only owned a set of 7mm booties cause I like my feet warm. Honestly, I don't think there is much difference in the feel of 5mm or 7mm booties once they're on, and the 7mm will keep your feet warm so if you only want to spring for one pair get the 7mm. 5mm finger gloves have always kept my hands warm although they usually don't last more then a season because the seams tear.
the suit is new - its the only one left in their stock so i think they just wanna get rid of it. luckily its my size. I agree that going in and trying on suits at a shop would be ideal, but im trying to see how much more money it will cost me. I'm a broke ass college kid. Anyone ever hear anything about this bodyglove fusion suit? thanks for the input my dudes.
I would deff buy that suite. In today's world all you are paying for is the brand. All the suits basically use the same materials and you get the same stretch and warmth for the most part, so at $220 for a 5mil that is NICE. But I must agree with Swellinfo on trying the suit on first. You could have a suit that fits you good in a medium and then another brand will be sized different. The medium might be to big or small but if you are used to the sizing of a particular company pull the trigger. At that price, I might take the chance. You can always send it back. I prefer the ninja 7mm booties. I also have 5mm and like the one poster above me said, you can not really tell the difference once they are on besides one being warmer. For gloves, I have the lobstrocities and the normal 5 fingers. I like the 5 fingers better, movement does not feel as restricted to me in the 5 finger style. With all that rubber on I like the least restriction as possible.
Ya my mistake. The ninjas I have are 5mm not 3...from Xcell. My normals booty is 7mm see how hard it is to tell the difference? I like my ninjas better still.
I only wear Body Glove wetsuits so I will tell you, the Fusion is right up your alley. This suit is a good "bang for your buck" suit. The only different between the Fusion and the Vapor (Body Gloves top end suit) is flexibility. The Vapor is 100% stretch w/vaporlock seams, triple glued and blindstiched. Where the Fusion is 60% stretch w/vaporlock seams, triple glued and blindstiched. To answer your question, get it! Sounds like a good price and for someone on a budget....very good buy. Thinking about gloves, like what has been said before, its personal preference. In Maryland, you wouldn't need anything more than 5mm gloves. My preference is a lobster claw. It feels weird at first, but you get use to it real quickly and I promise your hands will stay warm once the cold days of February hit. Get that suit before someone else does!!
