The first time I paddled across the inlet from Singer Island to surf Reef Road was in 1978, I was 19. I had no idea we had waves here like that. I remember a tanker coming in as we scratched across the inlet, having no idea how close the prop suck of the ship would be if we didn't make it across fast enough. I've chummed for sharks out there several times after being cut by barnacles climbing over the rocks during a surge. Now I drive and park (secret spot) and take my chances with the Po Po. It was like a magical kingdom when it went off. The coconut telegram, then surf reports, then surf photography, turned it into a zoo, but it still is great if you can dial it in. Just go for a swing wide, or wait for the third or fourth wave of the set. Nowhere near as powerful as Pacific juice, but can hold triple overhead easily. I have broken many old leashes there but nary a board. It has a sand bottom, contrary to its name. If you look at a map of Florida, it sits farthest east, closest to the Gulfstream, and up against a shipping channel to give it the deep water funnel to make it work during a north swell, generated from either a cold front or a hurricane swell that has cleared the Bahamas as it heads north towards Belmar.

Cocoa Pier gets much heavier waves, and that is where I had my most scariest surf experience. One day I will tell the tale. One day.

dudes im on life just admit that the east coast is the hardest coasts in the world, with the prime spot being folly beach sc, and hilton head island. the hardest lokals and fats lips on waves you'll ever see in your life. hair splitting lips that might decapitate your head. all you jersey types are just jealous of the prestige of the south. go back to the women of the north, that have been fist banged so hard in the south on vacations that you cant even get off anymore. this isn't meant to degrade you, its only meant to be the 100% truth.
