sure the landscape is peppered with almost elite and the hobgoods are in that category. but honestly I can't think of anyone else. so... who else besides the hobgoods? corey lopez is not in the hobgoods category and the hobgoods are not in the slater category.... looks like out of the entire east coast we have one with arguably 3 guys from the millions of people on the east coast....

CJ Hobgood was a ASP WCT Champion ...that's a pretty relevant status as far as I am concerned?
In the 90s and mid 2000s Corey Lopez was probably one of the most influential surfers around. Definitely would consider him relevant...Shea not as much.

    Does relevant= world's best?
There are plenty of EC surfers who are relevant. Ben B, Hobgoods, Lopez bros, the NC outerbanks crew, Dean Randazzo/Sam Hammer, Geiselman's, Balaram...lots of up and comers too from NY to Fla.
If you find yourself in the Pipemasters or Pipeline Pro, I'd consider you a relevant surfer no matter where you are from.
Elite is a whole other category. Obviously Slater is the most elite, and he is EC.
Elite is the best of the best, maybe top 5 of entire world, Slater, John John, Parko, Taj, ____
No where in the world can claim that status...it's a small group.

Stinkbug what do you want me to do? I wish there were more... but a topic that claims most of the pros from the east coast come from the south... but when you realize that there is only 1 guy in the world elite and 2 or 3 guys who had flash in the pan success... its a silly topic.

Pro Surfers, no matter where they are from are not relevant to me at all anyways. They don;t have any influence on what boards I ride, what clothes I wear, what I eat, how I exercise, or what I buy. Do I respect their wave riding abilities? Yes. Do I care who comes from where? Nope. To me, Peter North, Ron Jeremy, and John Holmes. Those were guys I looked up to. Those guys could rock a pu$$y.

I thought the topic was a joke. I just thought once we talked it out, it kinda came true. Cause in the grand scheme of things, if you list the most "important" or "successful" pro surfers FROM the east coast. The top 5 are all from the SE. Way below the mason dixon. I agree with you that there aren't even 25 guys to reference, but the only world title winners are from the SE and the lopez bros, the hobgoods and slater are all from the south. And on the CT a lot of successful guys were from east and west Florida as well. Guys from up north always hate on the the SE "mushy" waves and Florida in particular, but hey, its plenty consistent down there, by EC standards and for whatever reason, their mushball training ground obviously translates better on an international competitive level than the barrels of the NE. I guess FL and the SE is just a better training ground cause they have a better variety of waves and have more appropriate climate to be in the water more... I guess. And all that inbreeding probably helped too =)

you don't just go and apply for a job to bang hot nasty pornstars. all those dudes had to do "gay for pay" first.
kinda makes entry(no pun intended) into the biz a little less cool....

I think it mostly has to do with the weather. Just like Florida (and now Caribbean/South/Central America) is a breeding ground for Baseball. It's because they play year round.
Not many young kids surf year round in freezing weather and that is when they are developing...

Um........actually he moved back to NJ permanently about a year ago and opened Jerzey Devil Surfshop on the AC boardwalk with his brother Joe. If you haven't seen him it isn't because he's not here.......

Dean was always more of an Ocean City surfer anyway.

Going back to the original North East vs South East argument I think it had a lot to do with sponsorship opportunities being more available down south. There has always been a lot of talent in the Northeast but it takes money and sponsors to make a run at the pro scene.

Way off on the Lopez thing. Any CT surfer (him from 97-06) is elite and he has wins to back it up.
He's won Teaupoo, US Open, X Games (3x), ISA World Games.

Charges as hard as anyone in heavy barrels and has the airs too... But still Fu*k the SOUTH

And he had the best quote ever when cops were trying to keep guys out of the water during a hurricane swell

"I fuc*ing surf Pipeline for a living biatch... Get out of my fuc*ing face"
