So I've got to go to DC for business and I'm hoping to take the "long way home" via nags head / banks for a few days (1st week dec) and was wondering:

What's the water temp up ther' It say 68 but is it colder? Spring suit enough?

And any rec on a hotel; I not so worried about the $$ as its of season, just looking for a good clean safe place on the beach

    Thank u in advance,

I was down there last weekend... its definitely not 68, I have to look into this value here.

Anyway, last weekend, you could go with a 3/2, the water I'd say was hanging around 60. I was wearing booties as well, allthough they prob weren't necessary. Water temps can change quickly on the banks, so if you have a 4/3, I'd bring that along as well and definitely some booties.

Any locals want to chime on what they have been wearing this past week.

I stayed at the Seafoam hotel last weekend and it was alright and cheap, cool little place though. I think it's 54 dollars a night. I wore a 4/3 and no booties, I was fine. December though I would bring some booties.

oh ya, also, motel rates are sooo cheap this time of year in nags head. I stayed for $45 at the quality inn ($5 discount for having AAA). Nice enough place, and there was actually some waves right out in front.

I'd say bring a 4:3 if you have it and boots. It seems like the water is cooling a little faster this year compared to the last couple of years. OBX is subject to up welling which can effect the temp on any given day.

I was just down there on saturday, and everyone was wearing at least a fullsuit, booties and gloves, except one guy who was out in just a fullsuit (he didn't stay out for long) . I also had a hood because of the wind chill, but a few managed without one. But the week before I was down there, even though it sucked, but the air temp was warmer and i managed in just a 4:3. Just bring everything you have, its better to be hot than cold.
