Driving down highway17 at Myrtle Beach doing a little over 50 when I hear a loud banging noise. tie downs on roof came loose..board bangs on side of Jeep twice, then comes loose, hits asphalt, and lands in grass!! While stopping I am trying to figure out where I will get the money for a new board. Turns out it only has a few small scuff marks from the asphalt. No significant cracks, dings, etc. If you want a VERY durable, almost indestructible board, I highly recommend this 9.6 Happy Endings board by Gary Wilson at Surf City in Myrtle Beach
holy sh$t dude...surf allah be praised that your board survived that! I got a similar story but with a dog and i was on my way to wally world.
lol..Happened to me before as well..i put my boards in the car now. Glad your board is not too damaged.
scared crapless myself at 80mph. Running 3 lanes deep into oncoming Summer Sunday traffic to retrieve the board was just another one of my "stupid" acts, I'm not allowed to tell my kids...
Ashamed to admit it but it happened to me too. Like Gfootr had to run across 3 lane highway and back to get it - wearing flip flops. Not proud of it, don't think its funny, could have killed someone.
2 weeks ago my friends and I pack the flatbed to check a few spots and they staked in their longboards.. I kept telling them it was crazy even if you tie them down... It was in ACNJ so couldve been stolen or couldve flown away but they lost a 9 footer in ACNJ...somehow. Luckily I still got to shortboard a b1tchen waisthigh inlet break when the forecasts called for crap. ,,. shortboards are just a safer bet
When rooftoppin' it, I always use 3 tie-downs, never just two. Redundancy, in this case, is a beautiful thing.
^If I ever really HAD to rooftop, I would use as many tie downs as I could... I just don't trust it... Better than landing yourself on KookOfTheDay tho! Them kooks always come up with weirder ways to put their boards in compact cars.

happened to me when taking an injured friend to hospital. had to think for a bit as to whether to go back and get it cause drew was moaning loud in the back seat….but i did.
GARY IS THE MAN!!!!! Know him very well and have many of his boards and they all kick ass!!! I'd say your board absoultely had a HAPPY ENDING!!!! Lucky some dam tourist didn't run up all over it.....
If you have two DECENT straps on a real roof rack, you'll never lose your board. That is unless you forget to actually use the straps. Been there done that, on route 35. Was a section separated by a median with decent trafic. Had to go around the block to double back and get it. A garbage man had stopped and was trying to take it. He was like "Damn I thought was getting a free board". He didn't see it fly off teh rack, and since it landed next to a pile of garbage, he thought it was thrown out. It was so bizarre. Fins had flat spots, and there were scrapes on the bottom but no big dings. Surfed it 10 minutes later. Was a clark poly blank glassed at Moonlight in CA.
nothing irrational bout that. how bout 70mphgust combined with frontal air blast from mack truck 18 wheeler… i think its THE BEST PLACE to lose them off da top…..canyon on way north shore second...
I have a G. Wilson fish and have spent half the amount in repairs as I did purchasing it. Love the board, hate that it's as fragile as crystal... I am amazed that your board survived so well, I can only imagine the sense of relief after assessing the damage. How old were the straps you used? And, did you tie a knot at the mechanism?
