Why come all the way down to the beach, haul yourself across parking lots of fire and over dunes and other obstacles only to plop down and spend the entire day fighting against the wind to light one cig after the other, and to keep your mounting ashtray from blowing over?? I had to rescue a ladies (but hardly a lady) ashtray yesterday near the cb pier. what a f****ing disgrace. I've come to expect this kinda bs on a weekend but it was a tuesday. rant over.

ok, its better than in Hawaii, they made a law against it with fines that lifeguards can enforce, dont pay the fine, the man with the gun comes, resist that guy and well, you know the rest....

    also what about towel hits?

    you are free to
    a) ask them to stop
    b) stfu and move upwind
    c) dump her ashtray on her windsheild, or better yet if they have an open window/convertible......

Same deal in CA. Except they banned drinking on the beach too when they did it. That part actually took a huge chunk out of the spring break and summer economy....

But yeah, they will straight fine you on the spot...

But yeah, as an ex smoker, on and off, never for a really long stretch of time, I really don't mind people smoking wherever. As long as its authorized. Like, you are allowed to smoke on the beaches down here. Its the carolinas, so I am surprised they don't have cigarette vending machines in the parking lots...

But it's like when my mom comes to town or something. She is so put off by smoke and smokers, that she makes that awkward scene, where she says she has to move away, or says something loud enough for the smoker to hear. I'm like Mom, chill the f out, because they are allowed to smoke there. If we don't like it, we need to move.

But smokers have been attacked in this country for decades now, and I think it's gotten a little out of hand. I mean, I agree with keeping it out of restaurants, airplanes etc... but sh** man, every major city has some jacked up law about smoking within 50 feet of a building or this or that...

As long as people clean up after themselves, let them be... Its funny, cause you can walk around california, smoking blunts on the beach and no one seems to care. But ohh man, if you break out a cigarette, everyone throws sand at you... kinda crazy....

When my daughter got christened, my whole family flew out. My 85 year old grandmother, my mom, dad, brother etc. all came down to the OB pier to watch me surf one morning, cause it was freaking firing, and as soon as everyone gets out of the car, we see a bum slam a car window with his skateboard, crack deal gone wrong or something, so I shuffle them out of the parking lot, and by the time we get to the sea wall, there are two other bum looking obeacians, passing a joint and blowing clouds of ganja at my 85 year old grandma... My family was like, wtf man? I said, welcome to California... more specifically, welcome to OB... Bass Ackwards. No one cares that there are 45 bums sleeping under the seawall, or that people on every corner and all over the beach are blazing hasheesh enormous, but if you light a cigarette or crack a beer, the swat team will show up.

She was using an ashtray? I'm impressed. Most of them just use the beach as their ashtray and leave the butts in the sand.

Where humans go trash follows...BBG you can add to that list all the a$$ hats on the N End that leave their fire logs below the tide line so they can turn into 40lb child killing missiles in the surf (and fun to hit when you duck dive). Or all the fish hooks and other tackle that just gets abandoned. Or filet knives left in the sand. Not to mention the beer cans, mcdonalds bags, etc. etc...

Every time we camp there I round up all the kids in the AM and we go 100 yds in every direction cleaning up other people's crap.

    Humans. Bleh.

Glad you found it bro. I thought that story was going to end very badly.

Like back in the day when some kid tries to ash out the window and loses his grip. Car comes to a screeching halt and the guilty individual has to comb the roadside like a trash picking prison inmate...

Being an ex smoker for about a year now, the smell doesn't bother me unless its being blown in my face or something like that. On an open beach is fine for me. What does bother me is the habit people have to chain smoke. Its gross. Smoking is bad enough, chain smoking makes me want to puke. I work with people who will smoke 3 cigs in a row right after each other. Its gross and people with that kind of habit are usually fat. When skinny people smoke its fine to me, when the fat ones smoke I look at them with disgust. Weird. And honestly the fact that she had a ashtray is impressive.

As far as laws go, some beaches here are non smoking I believe, some are not. I could be wrong. But we did just recently get law passed to ban smoking on the train platforms and on the sidewalk in the city I am pretty sure too. At least in some areas iv definitely seen signs. At that point I think they are going a little to far.

lol I only smoke pot,i occasionaly smoke a cig like once a year or if im drinking, which is super rare.i don't have any problems with cig smokers, aslong as they don't leave butts all over the beach.i think mayor Bloomberg from ny with all his anti smoking tactics is wrong.people have a choice,we put up with a lot of bs so if smoking calms the nerves then smoke.

heres a funny ciggy story.when I was a teen,i was driving, stopped at a light,it was me my buddy and 2 chicks in the back.when the light turned green I drove off and didn't notice the dumb broad in the backseat tossed a cig out the window, which landed right on a cops windshield.so we get pulled over,we have a open gallon bottle of vodka in the back which we hid under the seat(I used to drink when I was young),I had a half z of bud in a cd wallet sitting on the dashboard lol in plain sight.luckily they didn't search the car and just lectured me about having certain people in my car.we were partying at the time, and I do not support drinking and driving.

yeah, my car story wasn't about cigarettes. It wasn't about making a buddy go clean up after himself, it was about something falling out the window that had FAR more value to a few young bucks.

But my IDIOT friend in San Diego got a DUI for that cig thing. He was the only a-hole on the entire 8 east, leaving OB at like 1am. He said he flicked a cig out the window. It blew up all over the street and a cop that was about 1/2 mile behind him, pulled him over and threw the book at him. DUI. Open container under the seat... The same guy ended up being a junkie and in and out of jail and rehab in the following years, but the vicious cycle all started with a parliament light flying out the window. Meanwhile, his nasty truck was filled with cigs in the ashtray and all over empty monster cans... Why toss it out the window genius?

smoke's just smoke. it goes away in the breeze. I've only got a problem with the paper packaging and other sheet people think is ok to just leave lying around anywhere.

ha, I usually do B. tis the ole Tragedy of The Commons. I have as much right to tell some lady to stop smoking on a "public" beach as she feels she has the right to smoke there. in the public sphere my wish to breathe clean air doesn't trump her wish to breathe dirty air. I just wish smokers would smoke where it's more convenient for them. Like a casino or something.

Stop smoking and start vaping. No tar, no butts, no carcinogens, no lighters, and much cheaper.

yesterday, I went to some secluded cliffs overlooking the ocean. I was enjoying the cool fresh ocean breeze...until I got a snoot full of cigarette smoke from the two assholes that had walked down underneath the cliff to smoke their lives away. I'm sure they threw all their butts down the cliff, too...I mean, seriously, how many smokers have the self esteem to take their butts with them and dispose of them properly?

Today, it was super hot at the beach...which, of course, brings out everybody. When I was walking to the showers, I saw these two obese women crammed in a car, one staring at a smartphone and the other huddled over a laptop...and the engine going (I guess to run the AC and the laptop).

I see this a lot: people drive to the beach, for no reason, and sit in their car with the engine running, windows open, for like 30 minutes...they never even get out. Bugs the sh!t out of me.

Didn't WB go smoke-free last year? It's really only a matter of time before CB and other nearby communities ban smoking entirely. I've already heard of a few alternative ideas, like designating specific areas of the beach for smoking and/or using the Freeman Park as a smoking zone. The wind takes care of the smell for me, but I hate when people leave butts all over the place. Sucks, but you can't fix stupid.
