beaches should be reserved only for people who surf or slide waves on sponges or whatever.regular people don't belong there, they have no clue about the seas and how to cope with it.if u want to get a tan go to the bay or a lake.the ocean isn't for you lol.I know a rich guy who lives on the beach, has oceanfront property.he walks his dog everyday on the beach, probly doesn't even pick up the poop, but he never goes in the water.whats the point of going to the beach if ur not going in the water.i bet theres a lot of rich oceanfront property holders that do the same.

True. Issuing fines would be a great source of revenue, but nobody would ever pay. Maybe CB will start a new trend by instituting smoking passes; modeled after the Freeman Park passes. $100 a year and you can smoke all you want!

I smoke when I occasionally have a few beers or if im crazy stressed. In the marine corps we spent half our enlistment cleaning up trash. We were taught to field strip smokes. Flick off the cherry when done, stomp it out, and throw the butt in the trash. I go nuts when I see butts on the beach. Especially when the trash is 10 feet away. Nasty civilians.

I used to organize beach clean ups each month for several years, and the only constant was that cigarette butts were by far the most numerous item found. They don't biodegrade, and birds and turtles can choke and die from ingesting them. People who leave them on the beach should get warned once, then get their a$$ thrown off for being pigs. That being said, one of the main reasons I quit being on the board of Surfrider was they wanted me to spearhead a movement to ban smoking on the beaches. It is unenforceable, it erodes our freedoms, and people who smoke on the beach and dispose of their butts are no problem, if you have the brains to sit upwind. My wife makes a big scene when someone lights up upwind, but life is too short. Plus I love a good doobie after a good session in the O. Just have the brains to be downwind from children and tourists and the PoPo. Duh!

WB did ban smoking on the beach a couple years back and just a week ago was the first time I have ever seen a cop give a warning to someone smoking. I don't mind the smoke but the cig butts in every direction is a sad sight.

Tend to agree. There's way too much fuss on this issue. Too many rules, regs, and fines as it is. Smokers aren't criminals.

The snowboarding shankster has made a great observation. I commonly see this as well. Doesn't bother me but I was aware of the phenomenon. Only aggravating when they're a life kook and don't know how to park, pull in/out of their spot, or operate on the public way that runs along the beach. As for why they don't get out, many of them are obese and wouldn't walk from the couch to the fridge if they had more automatic means.

Yes but the local guvmint got overruled by our new "down with big guvmint and regulations" state guvmint.

For the record I think people should be able to do whatever the hell they want anywhere but the penalties for being an a$$ hat 10x more severe. Smoke all you want but if you toss your butts in the sand I should be able to make a citizen's arrest with a blunt instrument.

Totally agree with you there. However I do get some strange looks if I'm vaping my mod and people see me exhale a huge cloud. I've legit had people run out of the way because they were downwind and got freaked out by a watermelon scented cloud hahaha

It's going to be interesting what laws they come up with regarding the ecigs/vapes and where you're allowed to vape. I'm going to be annoyed if they ban it on the same beaches where they've ban traditional cigarettes. It's harmless water vapor being compared combusted tobacco smoke, I bet there's more carcinogens in the sand and the water here in NJ than there is in ecig vapor lol.

So the problem doesn't seem to be smokers, smoking or cigarettes - it's the butts.

Let's get rid of the butts and get back to smoking's roots; Pall Mall, Navy Cut, Lucky Strike. Or get some Bugler and roll your own. If you're going to smoke, commit to it for chrissakes - no sissy filters and butts and lowered tar, blah blah blah.

This weeds (excuse the pun) out the casual (non-committed) smokers and the resulatant butts and makes room for the real, addicted, trash-free smokers.
